🌍Today on , we are reminded of the urgent need to reduce suffering and prevent premature deaths in people living with chronic lung diseases.

At the Forum of International Respiratory Societies - FIRS World Lung Day webinar, Prof Guy Marks, President of the Union and FIRS, delivered a powerful message:

🗣️"We have interventions that we know are highly effective in achieving this and can have a huge impact on the very substantial burden of disease. Achieving this is a matter of health justice and health equity."

This is not just about delivering treatment, it is about justice. Every person deserves access to effective care, regardless of where they live.

On the eve of the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), leading lung health experts unite in their call for urgent action to transform chronic respiratory diseases from a neglected crisis into a global health priority.

⚖️ Prof Guy Marks, President of The Union and Forum of International Respiratory Societies - FIRS, described the reason that action is needed right now in three words: impact, justice, and equity.

🌊 David Halpin, Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease, described the escalating crisis as a “tsunami” of disease that low-income and middle-income countries in particular are just not ready to cope with.

Thank to Esther Nakkazi and The Lancet Respiratory Medicine for highlighting this silent and deadly epidemic, that remains overlooked and underfunded: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(25)00360-1/fulltext

Excellent contributions from José Luis Castro, World Health Organization (WHO), Alvaro A. Cruz, Global Initiative for Asthma, Heather Zar, University of Cape Town, Leslie Rae Ferat, NCD Alliance and David Watkins, University of Washington.

For decades, chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been treated as a “Cinderella” issue in global health—a silent epidemic that affects around half a billion adults and children and causes 4 million deaths each year, yet it rem...
