I'm proud to share our recent publication, co-authored with my talented student Benjamin Stern. In it, we dive deep into the interaction between pupil size and corneal spherical aberrations (SA) on the performance of monofocal IOLs. This experimental model compares spherical, aberration-neutral, and aberration-correcting lenses, providing new insights into how these factors affect contrast sensitivity, depth of focus, and refractive error tolerance. A key highlight is the visual representation of the complex interplay between these variables, helping to clarify the role of SA in postoperative visual outcomes and underlining the importance of choosing the right IOL design tailored to both corneal SA and dynamic pupillary behavior, a crucial factor for optimizing patient satisfaction. We can now extend it to more complicated IOLs!
Congratulations to Benjamin Stern for his exceptional work on this project!

Inspired by the interest and questions about our new optimization approach, I created a page that explains it in a clear, practical way. Traditional methods focus on accuracy—zeroing out the average error—but often overlook precision (controlling error spread). Can we optimize both without relying on automated algorithms like gradient descent? This page says yes. It builds on our recent publication, offering insights and practical examples, including key calculations that show how balancing accuracy and precision can improve outcomes.

We recently published a simplified method to optimize intraocular lens calculation formulas (doi: 10.1167/tvst.13.6.2.), adjusting the constant to minimize not only the mean error but also the standard deviation (SD) or root-mean-square error (RMS). I am pleased to have collaborated with Langenbucher and his team, who led the bulk of the work in this important study evaluating the performance of this method. Congratulations to them for this valuable contribution! This research, now published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, highlights how collaborative efforts can potentially improve cataract surgery procedures and deliver better outcomes for patients.

Some time ago, we developed a new polynomial basis (the Gatinel-Malet polynomials) as an alternative to Zernike modes, which are not always clinically optimal for analyzing highly aberrated eyes — ironically, the very cases where wavefront analysis is most critical! Our newly published article presents a method to convert standard wavefront interpretations into this new polynomial basis, offering better clinical distinction between low and high-order aberrations. The article also provides examples illustrating the specific benefits of this approach.

The recent launch of the new multifocal intraocular lens, termed a "spiral IOL," has attracted considerable attention. This page is devoted to providing an illustrated overview of the related technology, which seeks to impart multifocal properties to an extraocular optic (such as a contact lens) or an IOL.

The recent introduction of a new multifocal lens, known as the "spiral" lens (Galaxy, Rayner), has garnered significant interest. This page is dedicated to an illustrated description of related technology, which aims to impart multifocal properties to an extraocular optic (contact lens) or intraocul...

Excited to share insights from my recent moderation at the Ophthalpreneurs event in beautiful Stresa! This gathering was unlike any other, with a unique focus on optimizing patient experiences through the lens of data and innovation in ophthalmology. We dove deep into how leveraging cutting-edge data analytics, AI, and personalized approaches can transform not just patient care but also how we educate and connect with our patients. The key takeaway? Embracing data-driven strategies can significantly empower patients, leading to informed decisions and enhanced healthcare outcomes.
Thank you Amanda and Francesco and congratulations on this unique experience!
