Maitri means loving-kindness or unconditional friendliness. It is the first of 'the four immeasurables' (the Brahmaviharas) in the Yoga Sutras, which include loving-kindness (maitri), compassion (karuna), empathetic joy (mudita) and equanimity (upeksha).

Loving-kindness meditations often include affirmations such as "may I be happy," "may I be healthy" or "may I be at ease." These affirmations can be directed inwardly toward oneself, as well as outwardly toward people in your life, including loved ones, as well as those in your life who you may be having a difficult time with.

We can often be our own toughest critics. The practice of Maitri teaches us to treat ourselves in the same loving and compassionate way that we treat our best friends.

By cultivating an attitude of loving kindness toward everyone ~ including ourselves we begin to dissolve any sense of a separate self as a means of connecting to the divine within.

It’s a powerful practice. Give it a try 🙏🏼🪷

Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali, dedicated to honouring the birth of Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and symbol of health, well-being and longevity.

Today, Goddess Lakshmi is honoured and the Lakshmi puja is performed to invoke success, prosperity and happiness.

Traditionally, diyas are lit to ward off evil spirits, and rice flour is used to make small footprints that signify the arrival of Lakshmi.

Dhanteras this year also falls on my birthday ✨🪔✨

During Lakshmi puja this evening, I asked for all beings to live in freedom, abundance and peace.

May it be so for me
May it be so for you
May it be so for us all 🙏🏼🌎🕊️

“Sometimes we don’t realise the weight of what we’ve been carrying until we feel the weight of it’s release”

I remember reading that for the first time a few years ago and it really resonated with me.

I got a firsthand lesson of this recently during a week long trip walking the Gower coastline. We wanted a stripped back experience and so we took only what we could carry in our backpacks 🎒

After Day 1, my body was already telling me I was carrying too much 😩

Day 2 was our longest day mileage wise and when I took off my backpack when we stopped for lunch, I REALLY felt resistance to putting it back on again!!

When we reached our digs early evening and I could take it off finally it was such a huge relief.

After having a rest day I wasn’t really excited at the prospect of carrying my rucksack again as we prepared to set off on the next leg of our journey.

Much to my surprise, even after a couple of miles, I didn’t feel any discomfort. Nothing.

I guess my body had adjusted to carrying the weight in just a couple of days.

On our last day of walking, we sat on a bench overlooking the sea while we ate our sandwiches.

As I looked at my backpack, the realisation dawned that it is a pretty good metaphor for this human earth school experience.

We are all holding SO much.

It matters not our race, colour, gender or religion.

We are ALL united in navigating our way through this world with a whole lot of baggage that causes us suffering. Often caused by people, who themselves, were/are holding a lot of stuff that causes them suffering.

I wholeheartedly believe that the fundamental purpose of this human experience is about bringing awareness to what we are carrying and then having the courage to discard all the crap that isn’t serving us.

And yes, next time I’ll definitely pack less stuff ☺️

Here’s to travelling light 🎈🙏🏼🎈
