About time!

17/06/2024

Parkinson’s, Crohns, sight loss, breathing issues, lupus, ME, Cystic Fibrosis just a few ‘invisible disabilities’ that might mean people qualify for a blue badge! So that they have more space around the car for assistance, closer to amenities if they need toilets, closer to entrances if crossing roads might be hazardous, just a few examples of many, for the narrow minded ‘they don’t look disabled’ ‘they walk around the shop well enough’ kind of people that really wind me up…. Maybe if you can’t be kind keep your opinions to yourself?? Just an idea. Can you tell what kind of post I just read!? 🙄🙄

It’s taken me a while to post this mostly because I was putting it off and pretending it’s not real. The founder and principal consultant Richard Jones has sadly passed away. The team will keep the company and legacy going as much and as long as we can. Please bear with us while we take some time out to grieve this amazing man. Gemma x

On Friday we hosted a Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee morning to raise funds for such an important charity. We were joined by lots of friends old and new as we tucked in to some fantastic home-made treats from our very own Gemma Price, Accessible Wales’s answer to Mary Berry. One in two of us will face cancer in our lifetimes. If you are able to, please consider making a one-off donation to Macmillan here: https://donation.macmillan.org.uk/wbcm/one-off.

At the event we also celebrated the first stage of our Community Inclusion Project, the project aims at improving the accessibility of community buildings in the project areas. It also aims to raise awareness of difficulties disabled people use when accessing these vital community resources.

We will be uploading more information on our website by Friday 6th, please remember to take a look for more information. If you run a community building or are part of a group that works out of a community building in Cynon Valley please drop us an email on rjones@accessible.wales as you may be able to take part.

Thanks to all those who attended, representatives from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, Tracey from Accessible Caring Transport , Emma from Hirwaun Village Hall, Beth Winter MP , Vikki Howells MS, PC Nick James, Tracey from New Horizons Mental Health , Rhys from FC , Cllr Adam Fox and friends and family, Margaret, Owen, Jack, Richard Vaughan, Louise, Mary, Julia, Lucy, Darren and Theo.

SUPPORTING MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING ☕🫖🍰

Today is the official date of Macmillan Coffee Morning, the annual fundraiser bringing people together to support Macmillan Cancer Support in their work supporting people affected by cancer.

I went along to the Coffee Morning organised by Accessible Wales in their offices in Robertstown, to enjoy a cup of tea, a slice of cake and a catch up with Richard and the team.

One in two of us will face cancer in our lifetimes, so if you cannot get along to an official event, please consider donating the cost of a cup of tea if you are able, at https://donation.macmillan.org.uk/wbcm/one-off. Every pound helps.

It was also a chance to hear about the new Community Inclusion Project Accessible Wales have launched. I look forward to following this important piece of work.
