Do you remember the first time you went to a yoga class?

I do. I spent most of it watching everyone else, wondering if I was doing it right, waiting for it to be over.

Even in shavasana I was not really resting. I was monitoring.
But then as I kept going back, week after week. It started getting easier and one day as I lay down, I actually relaxed without even trying.

That moment is your parasympathetic nervous system switching on. Your body moving out of alert mode and into rest and digest.

And here is the thing, the same pattern shows up everywhere. A new job, room full of strangers, a difficult conversation. The body stays on guard until it has gathered enough evidence that it is safe.

I wrote about this properly on the blog this week including a simple heart rate monitor exercise that shows you how well your nervous system is regulating right now.

Does this resonate with you? I would love to know in the comments.

Since the Busy Life Rest session, I have been thinking about how most of us live in constant ‘on’ mode.

Even during rest, the mind keeps on moving,
Thinking,
Planning,
Replaying the conversation,
Trying to stay on top of everything

And over time, the body can forget what it feels like to actually slow down.

The body doesn’t need to do one big reset but small actions done consistently.

Slower breaths,
Quieter mornings,
Stepping outside for a few minutes

Giving the nervous system small signals that it is safe enough to relax again.

Take a moment and notice your body right now.

Are your shoulders lifted without you realising?
Is your jaw gently clenched?
Is your tongue resting tightly inside your mouth?
Are the muscles around your eyes or forehead holding tension?

Many of us carry stress in the body without even noticing.

And sometimes, the simplest shift can begin to change that pattern.

Softening the shoulders.
Unclenching the jaw.
Letting the tongue rest gently.
Relaxing the face.
Finding a position that feels supported.

Small changes, but the body is always listening.

Research in nervous system science suggests that these subtle signals can shape how the brain interprets safety in the body.

And in that sense, these small moments of release are not just relaxation… they are communication with the nervous system.

Modern life keeps many of us in a constant state of ‘doing’

Even during moments of rest, the mind often continues planning, processing and thinking ahead.

Over time, this can affect our energy, sleep, focus and ability to properly switch off.

On 19 May, I will be hosting a free online Busy Life Reset session as part of Grampian Wellbeing Festival.

We will explore:
• how stress impacts the nervous system
• why rest doesn’t always feel restful
• simple ways to support the body through everyday habits
• a short guided relaxation practice

A gentle and practical session for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the pace of modern life.

We often think we need a big reset to feel better.

A weekend away.
A day off.
One long yoga or wellness session.

And while those things can help in the moment, the nervous system usually responds more to smaller experiences repeated consistently.

A slower morning.
A deeper breath.
A few quiet minutes without stimulation.
Moments where the body no longer feels under pressure.

The body learns through repetition, not intensity.

Been reflecting on this while writing my next blog post.

Do you also find that the smaller things done regularly help more than occasional big resets?

When was the last time you sat somewhere quiet like this…
without needing to check your phone, think ahead or do something productive?

Sometimes we don’t realise how uncomfortable stillness has become until we try to slow down.

Even in moments of rest, the mind keeps moving.
Thinking about the next thing.
Replying to conversations internally.
Running through lists without even noticing.

And over time, that constant ‘doing’ starts to feel normal.

Have you noticed that in yourself too?

This is something I will be exploring gently in my free Busy Life Reset session on 19 May (online).

You try to rest… but it doesn’t really feel like rest.

Even when there is no real danger, your body can still feel slightly on edge.
Not because something is wrong, but because it doesn’t always clearly distinguish between actual threat and everyday stress.

And in modern life, stress isn’t always intense… it’s just constant.

So your system doesn’t always get the chance to fully switch off.

This is why you can lie down to rest, but still feel wired.
Your body feels tired, but your mind keeps going.

I have written more about this in my latest blog!

You don’t struggle to relax because you lack discipline.
You struggle because your body has been in constant ‘on mode’ for too long.

And when that becomes normal… stillness can feel uncomfortable.

This is something we can gently shift.

I will be sharing more about this over the coming days, and also holding a free online ‘Busy Life Reset’ session in May as part of Grampian Wellbeing Festival.

So happy to share this conversation is now live on Instagram ✨

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Victoria Mudie, course director of the Health Coach Diploma at the College of Naturopathic Medicine, where I completed my training in 2022.

We spoke about my journey into health coaching, why I chose this path and how the course has shaped the way I work today.

If you’re curious about health coaching or exploring this field, I hope this gives you some insight 💛

You are not lazy.
You are not unmotivated.
You are likely just living in a constant state of ‘on’

Even when you sit down to rest, your mind is still running through everything that needs to be done.
So your body never really gets a chance to slow down.

That’s not a discipline problem.
It’s a nervous system pattern.

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing simple, realistic ways to reconnect with a calmer nervous system in daily life.

I am also holding a free Busy Life Reset session in May as part of Grampian wellbeing festival.
