Tendonitis vs. Tendinopathy. What’s the Difference?

These two terms often get used interchangeably, but they describe different conditions. Understanding the distinction can help you recognise what is happening in your body and why it is important to seek the right treatment.

👉 Tendonitis

An acute inflammatory response in the tendon.

Usually triggered by a sudden injury or overload.

Symptoms: sharp pain, swelling, warmth and tenderness around the tendon.

Think of it as the body’s short-term healing reaction to small tears.

👉 Tendinopathy

Tendinopathy is a general term used to describe any disorder of the tendons (thick cords that attach muscles to bones). More related to chronic degenerative conditions of the tendon.

Caused by repetitive overuse, poor healing or ongoing strain.

Symptoms: gradual pain, stiffness, weakness and reduced function.

Here the tendon structure begins to break down, losing its strength and elasticity over time.

💡 In simple terms:

Tendonitis = acute inflammation (short-term).

Tendinopathy = degeneration (long-term).

📌 Why this matters:
Treating tendonitis as if it were tendinopathy (or vice versa) can delay recovery. Accurate assessment is key whether it’s rest, manual therapy, exercise rehabnor advanced treatments such as steroid injectios, each condition requires a tailored approach.

Dear Clients,

Recently, I have received many inquiries, so I’d like to take this opportunity to super briefly explain the key difference between Relaxing Massage and Deep Tissue / Sports Massage:

Relaxing Massage
It is like a nervous system reset (or more SPA like treatment), calming stress, lowering cortisol and enhancing overall wellbeing. Gentle techniques are used to soothe the body and mind.

💪 Sports / Deep Tissue Massage
This is more advanced, a mechanical reset targeting deeper muscle layers and connective tissue to repair and restore musculoskeletal function. It improves mobility, range of motion and supports recovery from tension or injury.

Both treatments are valuable, but they serve different purposes depending on your needs.

⚠️ Kind reminder. If you book a Relaxing Massage which is on special offer, please remember this is not a Deep Tissue/Sports Massage - they are completely different techniques and they require different training, intensity and therapeutic power. 😊 Upon assessment and discussion prior to the treatment, I am happy to change the treatment from Relaxing to DT/ sports but please note, there will be a price difference.
