☘️❣️☘️ "In the folklore of northern Scotland, particularly the Orkney and Shetland Islands, selkies are mythical creatures that are said to possess the ability to shapeshift.

The term 'selkie' is derived from the Scots term 'selch' or 'selk,' meaning 'seal.' Legend has it that selkies dwell in the sea as seals but can shed their skins to take on human form on land.

Traditional tales often tell the story of a man who comes across a female selkie in human form, frequently sunbathing on a shore.

He takes her seal skin, preventing her from returning to the sea, and forces her to become his wife. Despite bearing children and living as a human for years, she is often depicted as longing for the ocean, constantly gazing toward it.

Ultimately, the selkie discovers her hidden skin and, upon retrieving it, immediately returns to the sea, abandoning her human life, including her children, never to return.

However, in some versions of the story, she occasionally returns to visit her children, or they encounter a seal that seems to recognize and acknowledge them.

A version of this tale from Shetland was published in 1822, which told the story of a selkie who was already married to a selkie of her own kind in the sea before being captured and forced to live on land.

In other Shetland traditions, selkies are portrayed in a more sinister light, being described as beings that lure humans into the sea, particularly around midsummer, where the victims are never seen again". 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌊🦭

I say this about every festival, and I mean it, but, this is my favourite one. 💚

Brigid is on her way and she is bringing with her the light, the warmth, the birds, the laughter, the springtime 🌱

It’s an old Irish tradition to make up a bed for the arrival of the goddess, and leave out a scarf for her to bless. (The scarf can then be used to cure headaches) I’ve also made her a bite to eat. 💕

The goddess is in her maiden form again, the ground is stirring. Mother Earth is waking up.
New opportunities await, the seeds of ideas are being planted. We are out of the darkness and the light is just around the corner. 🌅🌱
