Calm and Supportive Energy for the Thinkers and the Worriers
Having a dog who is a thinker and a worrier is very interesting from an energetic perspective and Finlay our beautiful springer spaniel has certainly been an excellent teacher.
When a dog or other animal goes into worry mode it can sometimes be quite difficult not to be pulled into that worry energy cycle along with them and this is because it is very natural for us to react with worry if we think that something is not right with our animals.
Over time I have found that if Finlay tells me that he is worried about something and I react with worry I am in fact reaffirming to him that he is quite right to be worried and we end up in a downward worry energy spiral that is not very good for either of us.
It is in fact much more productive to maintain a calm neutral energy while working out what Finlay is telling me and then considering how I can best support him.
An easy example is when we are on a walk and Finlay comes back to tell me that someone is walking towards us, and to ask if this is okay. This works very well since I can verbally tell Finlay, “Yes, I think they are friends,” and “It is okay,” and when I do this, I can convey to him the feeling of looking forward to meeting up with nice friends. Or if it is not okay, I can pop him on the lead, and we are then ‘holding hands.’
This is a lovely way of sharing reassuring and supportive energy with Finlay, and we all know the feeling of looking forward to meeting up with nice people and animals that we like to spend time with.
Sometimes it does not take much of a change to cause Finlay to have a loss of confidence and a good example of this was when we changed our car.
Finlay was always very enthusiastic about jumping into the old car to go for his walks but when faced with a new car he turned around and instead decided to go and lie on the couch which to him felt like the safer place to be. So we ‘held hands’ for that one too, while I thought about and conveyed the feeling and anticipation of going for a fun walk.
Sometimes it is also great just to laugh at a challenge, or situation since this is a lovely way of lifting the energy around us and our animals. Laughter really can be the best medicine, and it certainly worked well when Finlay decided that the couch was a safer place to be than the strange new car.
Finlay is a beautiful kind, patient and intelligent boy, I love seeing the world through his eyes and he has certainly taught me the benefits of working with and sharing lovely calm supportive energy around him.
