Watercolour study today at work showing how to do wet on wet, wet on dry and sgraffito techniques

In tonight’s lesson we were using different tools to print our own beautiful mandalas. We looked at symmetry and pattern before deciding on a six pronged design. More detail was added towards the end with posca pen. Totally chilled out exercise 😊

My equivalent of an embroidery sampler but using different wet and dry art media. This is a great exercise if someone hasn’t had much opportunity to try different materials. We start by taking a pencil for a walk to get the shapes, then we fill them in using all sorts of things. Patterns can be added later in layers to create an unusual but unique piece and in the process gain a better understanding of how things work together.

One of my students wanted to create a watercolour cherry blossom, so that’s exactly what we did! Watercolours are such a beautiful medium but can often have a mind of their own which keeps them exciting. It’s a good plan to have a play around before you go for your main piece.
