Breaking Down Barriers: How a BSHAA Event Helped Me Change a Client's Life

It was there that I met members of the British Cochlear Implant Group (BCIG), who shared a straightforward and informative document outlining the criteria for cochlear implant referrals. As a private hearing aid audiologist, I had always assumed these referrals needed to go through a patient’s GP. Discovering that I could refer directly to the BCIG was eye-opening—and I decided to act on it.

The referral process turned out to be simple and efficient. The team at Scotland’s CI Unit in Kilmarnock were clear and communicative at every stage, and I was kept fully informed throughout. One of my clients, David Tulip, kindly agreed to share his journey in his own words.

Undiagnosed Hearing Loss: Did You Know?...

Could this be you?

In the 2011 census, 12,671 people in Aberdeen reported having long-term hearing issues. This is a significant figure but it is also estimated that as many as 18,400 people in the City may experience some form of hearing loss. This suggests that the prevalence of undiagnosed hearing loss is an issue.

A recent report by the Hearing Loss and Deafness Alliance highlights that the prevalence of hearing loss will increase considerably and a report by the RNIB estimates that by 2035, around 14.2 million adults will have hearing loss across the UK, an increase from the current figure of 12 million.
