Archie at Aberdeen Neonatal Unit

Archie at Aberdeen Neonatal Unit We are the official charity of the Neonatal Unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, supporting babies born too sick or too soon.

All of the money that is donated and fundraised for Archie at The Neonatal unit goes back into the Unit. We have helped provide enhanced medical equipment, pediatric training & research, and family support for the parents and carers whose babies are in the unit.

As it is World Prematurity Day, we are proud to share a little of our very own Sarah’s story.

Sarah, our Project Coordinator here at The Archie Foundation, was born at just 28 weeks weighing only 3lbs and spent 10 weeks in the neonatal unit. She is now 32 and a wonderful part of our team.

We love reading the many stories and updates shared by families reflecting on their neonatal journeys. We feel incredibly proud to support babies and their families throughout these early days and to stand beside them every step of the way 💜

Today is World Prematurity Day, a moment to recognise and celebrate the little warriors who arrive too soon, the families who walk this journey with such strength and love, and the wonderful staff who care for them with such dedication. They deserve appreciation every single day 💜

Yesterday we were delighted to hold a few lovely events ahead of World Prematurity Day. The day began with a relaxed brunch for current families in the neonatal unit, followed by a support afternoon in the MacGillivray Room at AMH. It was a brilliant event and we want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along. It was wonderful to see so many families and their little ones, including those who made the journey from as far as Edinburgh.

A very special thank you also goes to Revolution Aberdeen for very kindly providing pizzas for the afternoon. They were so popular there were none left! 🍕

To continue the celebration today, we were delighted to be supported by The Bread Guy and J.G. Ross (Bakers) Limited who generously provided a wonderful spread of treats, including slices of cake and mince pies, for families and staff in neonatal. Support from local partners like The Bread Guy and J.G. Ross (Bakers) Limited means so much to us. It helps us show our appreciation, bring people together and continue celebrating the strength and resilience within our neonatal community. Having local businesses join us in marking days like today reminds families and staff that the wider community is standing with them ⭐

Please also keep an eye out for Marischal College, which will be turning purple this evening in celebration of World Prematurity Day. Purple is the colour of prematurity and a symbol of hope and awareness for families everywhere 💜

October was another busy month at the Archie Family Centre, with families spending a total of 455 nights with us.

We are so proud to say that last month we could support 121 families from across Scotland, with our 19 ensuite rooms, each with a pull-out buddy bed. Our Family Centre offers a home away from home for parents and carers while their baby or child is in hospital. We help take away one worry from what is often an incredibly difficult time.

This space is completely free of charge to those who need it most.

A huge thank you to all our supporters 💙

This Saturday, we want to shine a light on David, who is taking on an incredible challenge: climbing Meikle Tap 25 times in 25 days ⭐

He is braving dark chilly evenings, and even the thick haar we’ve had recently, all to raise funds for The Archie Foundation. Often joined by his son, David’s determination and commitment are nothing short of inspiring.

We are so proud of what he’s achieving. Challenges like this make such a difference, helping to fund the vital work we do, from emergency grants for families to the small comforts that mean so much during hospital stays.

Thank you, David, for your amazing effort and support 💜

November is World Prematurity Month 💜

Each year, we take time to recognise the smallest and strongest among us, babies born too soon and the incredible families and staff who care for them.

One of the many ways The Archie Foundation supports babies and their families in the Neonatal Unit is through 100 Day Gifts. These special gifts mark a huge milestone for babies who reach 100 days old in neonatal care, a moment that truly deserves to be celebrated.

Recently, baby Aribella and twins Lucy and Eden reached this amazing milestone. Both families were so grateful to mark such a meaningful day, not only for them and their babies, but also for the dedicated staff who have been by their side every step of the way.

With Archie’s support, each baby received a carefully chosen gift, thoughtfully picked by Neonatal Unit staff to ensure it was perfect for them.

We are so proud of every baby and family on their neonatal journey, and equally proud of the wonderful staff who work tirelessly, day and night, to care for these tiny warriors. 💜

If you would like to support causes like this, why not take part in our Prematuri-Tea campaign this November? ☕ Host your own afternoon tea and help raise vital funds for the Neonatal Unit.

🎃👻 Halloween fun wasn't just at the children's hospital! 👻🎃

The Neonatal Unit joined in too with a fantastic dress-up competition for staff, parents, and some very special little people! 🧡

This lovely initiative, started by the amazing neonatal team, brought some joy and laughter to the unit during what can often be long and challenging days.

Archie was delighted to support by funding some tasty treats and prizes for the winners! 🏆✨

We hope everyone had a wonderful time, and look at how precious all these costumes are!

Our Story

What do we do?

Since 1984 we have helped hundreds of families. Many spend a few days in the unit, while other babies need specialist care for longer. However long you are there it can be a worrying time, emotionally, physically and financially. All of the money that is donated and fundraised for Friends of the Neonatal Unit is used to benefit babies and their families during their stay and beyond. We have helped provide enhanced medical equipment, paediatric training & research, and family support for the parents and carers whose babies are in the unit.
