Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) is a modern, evidence-based form of talking therapy.
(SFH) is a modern, evidence-based therapeutic approach that integrates principles from Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)—a goal-oriented form of talk therapy—with the relaxing, subconscious-accessing power of hypnosis (also called trance). Developed in the UK around 2008 by David Newton and his team at the Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training (CPHT), SFH draws from neuroscience research on brain plasticity, the work of Milton Erickson (for indirect hypnosis techniques), and Steve de Shazer (for solution-building questions). It's designed to be brief (often 4–6 sessions), collaborative, and empowering, helping clients achieve lasting positive changes without dwelling on past traumas.
Unlike traditional hypnotherapy or psychoanalysis, which might involve regression to uncover root causes, SFH is strictly forward-looking. The core philosophy: You already have the inner resources and strengths to solve your problems—therapy simply helps you identify, amplify, and apply them. Sessions typically last 60 minutes and combine structured discussions (e.g., "What would your ideal day look like?") with guided trance to embed positive suggestions, visualisations, and coping strategies. Trance feels like a natural "daydream" state—relaxed, focused, and enjoyable—making it accessible even for sceptics.
