Mr Craig Mackay, Consultant Colore**al and General Surgeon at Albyn Hospital, explains that symptoms like bleeding from the bottom or tummy pain are quite common.

While they can be caused by simple, non serious conditions such as piles or diverticular disease, they can also be signs of something more serious, including bowel cancer.

He stresses how important it is to get these symptoms checked early. A prompt assessment helps find out what’s really going on, leads to a clear diagnosis, and ensures you get the right treatment as soon as possible.

Let’s Talk About Bowel Cancer Symptoms

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, but spotting the signs early can make a huge difference. Most symptoms won’t mean cancer, but it’s always best to get checked early by your GP.

Most of the time these symptoms aren’t bowel cancer—but it’s important not to ignore them.

Our team of Consultant Gastroenterologists and General and Colore**al Surgeons at Albyn Hospital provides expert assessment and treatment for anyone experiencing these symptoms. A GP referral isn’t necessary, as our consultants are able to accept self‑referrals.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

We’re helping spread the word about the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, because early action can save lives.

Every year, around 4,000 people in Scotland are diagnosed with bowel cancer. Knowing what to look out for and understanding the facts can make a real difference.

Did you know?
- Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in Scotland.
- Age matters: 94% of cases are found in people over 50.
- Rising cases in younger people: There’s been a 49% increase in diagnoses among those under 50 between 2013 and 2023.
- Early detection saves lives: You’re 14 times more likely to survive if it’s found at the earliest stage, stage 1.

If something doesn’t feel right, see your GP.

Spotting symptoms early gives you the best chance of successful treatment.

Our team of Consultant Gastroenterologists and General and Colore**al Surgeons at Albyn Hospital provides expert assessment and treatment for anyone experiencing these symptoms. A GP referral isn’t necessary, as our consultants are able to accept self‑referrals.

We’re incredibly proud of Prof Gerald Lip, who also works here at Albyn Hospital, for appearing on ITV’s This Morning to share pioneering research (by the University of Aberdeen, NHS Grampian, and Kheiron Medical Technologies) showing how AI can boost early breast cancer detection by over 10%.

Fantastic work and a great step forward for early diagnosis and patient care.

You may have caught Professor Gerald Lip and Yvonne Cook on ITV's 'This Morning' sofa. They were invited on to talk about University of Aberdeen-led research that found that using AI in breast cancer screening can increase detection of breast cancer by more than 10%.

Yvonne took part in the research while getting a routine mammogram. The AI assisted procedure detected cancer that would not have been picked up at such an early stage and Yvonne was able to access treatment right away.

The research was a collaboration with NHS Grampian, and Kheiron Medical Technologies, now part of DeepHealth Inc., and was funded through the NHS AI in Health and Care Award in partnership with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
