What is Trauma?
Trauma is something that happens to you that makes you so upset that it overwhelms you. There is nothing you can do to stave off the inevitable, because you are unable to function in the face of this particular threat. But the trauma is not the event that happens, the trauma is how you respond to it. Read that again.
One of the largest mitigating factors against getting traumatized is who is there for you at that particular time. An example: When as a kid, you get bitten by a dog, it’s really very scary and nasty. But if your parents pick you up and say, “oh I see that you’re in a bad state, let me help you” that dog bite doesn’t become a big issue because the foundation of your safety has not been destroyed.
The way that fear shows up in most people’s lives is in the form of anxiety. Where it’s no longer fear of a specific thing, it’s just fear of the world. So that original fear that’s meant to result in a cry for help, now becomes chronic anxiety. So, fear not dealt with gets ingrained as anxiety. It’s no longer about anything specific; it’s just being in the world is a source of fear.
Have you ever been told to just move on and get over it after experiencing something traumatic…? If you have, you know it’s not that simple.
Trauma isn’t just a bad memory that we can choose to forget, or a wound that heals naturally over time.
Things that used to not be triggers now trigger trauma reactions. And so, people who discover betrayal, for example, often their trauma symptoms get worse over time, not better. Because the threat never goes away. They are always living with the threat. The wear and tear on their nervous system causes their window of tolerance to get more and more narrow, so it takes less to set them off with a trigger.
With trauma, you may experience flashbacks, panic attacks, PTSD, dissociation, nightmares, sadness & depression, a desire to self-harm, addictions to numb out. Mental health issues, toxic stress, even violence.
This includes people who have been through a physical or sexual assault, abuse, an accident, a disaster, or many other serious events.
Our experience of working with children who have suffered early trauma and loss is that they are often misdiagnosed and misunderstood by professionals, friends and family who have the best interests of the child at heart, but who don't yet know about the impact of early trauma. Labels of being ‘naughty’, ‘autistic’, ‘ADHD’ or ‘behavioural problems’ often lead to adult responses which, at times, can hold back the inner child from progressing and developing.
To "get rid of" trauma, which is the process of recovery from its symptoms, firstly, you should seek professional help combined with self-care such as practicing mindfulness, grounding, sticking to a routine, and seeking support from trusted friends or peer groups. It's also crucial to remember that recovery is possible, even many years after a traumatic event; and professional assessment ensures treatment is tailored to your individual needs.
