Countdown to Survey

Fiona Mitchelhill Chief Officer explains why Pathway to Excellence is important to her : The Pathway journey is about listening to you and building the kind of environment where great care can thrive, consistently and sustainably. Your voice in the upcoming survey matters because it tells us what’s working, where we can do better, and how we can support you to do your best work.

Countdown to Survey

For me being involved in pathway has been a true journey. Sometimes the positivity of others to encourage you to reflect and celebrate what we do well during times of great pressure has felt ill timed. I have now seen how taking those moments to think and share what we do, the system and organisation we work in and contribute to really does make the environment I and we work in a great one. This then makes the real impact on our patients. Having been part of the leadership EOP group we realised that it is the small things that make a difference. A genuine acknowledgment of a job done well, an appraisal that is meaningful and time invested in you. Visible leadership where you know your voice will be heard I would encourage you all to get involved, if not already and have your say on our Pathway Survey.

Great achievement and thoroughly deserved. Congratulations Dr Palin.

Leading Aberdeen Psychiatrist Given Lifetime Achievement Award

A top Aberdeen psychiatrist has received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in significantly improving patient care.

Dr Alastair Palin who works for NHS Grampian and is based in the Royal Cornhill Hospital was given the award by The Royal College of Psychiatrists at their General Psychiatry Conference in Belfast, this month.

The clinician has had a long career within psychiatry and is one of the most prominent general adult psychiatrists in Scotland.

As well as his work improving care for patients - Dr Palin also received the award for his work in general adult psychiatry at local, national and international level.

He was also recognised for having a track record in leadership and being recognised as an expert in his field.

Dr Jane Morris, chair of RCPsych in Scotland congratulated Dr Palin on his Award. She said: “We’re all thrilled that Alistair has been recognised by the College in this way with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“His notable achievements include a visionary contribution to the leadership of mental health services, the ability to connect with people in his signature friendly and cheerful manner, and his genuine concern for us all during the COVID crisis.

“He is a beloved figure among patients and peers alike and has inspired many generations of psychiatrists.”

Dr Alastair Palin said: “ "I thank the College for this honour, which is a very pleasant surprise.

“I would like to share the award with the many wonderful colleagues with whom I have worked with - but also more importantly with all the people, their families and carers, who it has been my privilege to work with and hopefully help, over my career."

Dr Palin studied for a medical degree at Aberdeen University and trained at both Aberdeen and Edinburgh University. He has been a member of RCPsych since 1987 and Fellow since 2001.

He was a full-time consultant in adult psychiatry between 1990 to 2014 and since then has continued to work as a consultant part-time.

Dr Palin was clinical director from 1999 and since 2014 has been a medical director for Mental Health and Learning Disability Services in Grampian.

He also spent four years as a clinical advisor in adult mental health for Health Improvement Scotland and has been vice-chair and then chair of the medical managers group for the College in Scotland.

He still sits as chair on several groups including the system wide adverse event group, clinical and care governance group for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities in Aberdeen City – as well as Mental Health and Learning Disability Services across Grampian, the Forensic Strategic Programme Board and the Police Liaison Committee.

Dr Palin’s specialises in multi-agency team working and models of care for general psychiatry services with particular focus on working with primary care colleagues, who he has published several research papers with.

NHS Grampian: Caring - Listening - Improving

Royal Cornhill Hospital (RCH) in Aberdeen provides specialist inpatient psychiatric care for the populations of Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire, as well as for the Orkney and Shetland Islands.

A number of different sub specialties are provided, varying from learning disability, adult (up to 65) and older adult (over 65) inpatient services as well as more specialist services including forensic, rehabilitation and a regional in patient eating disorder unit (the Eden Unit) which provides a service for all the Health Boards in the North of Scotland The philosophy of care is that this is provided on a multidisciplinary, multiagency patient centred team model in which patients are encouraged to be full partners in their care and recovery.

In addition, RCH acts as the base for community mental health teams in adult and older adult services which are aligned to specific General Practices in City and Shire. These teams will include doctors, nurses, social workers , psychologists , occupational therapists and pharmacists and have input from other professionals eg physiotherapists and dieticians as required. They work closely with General Practices and often hold clinics within the Practice, particularly in Aberdeenshire. There are also community teams for specialists services eg forensic and rehabilitation based at RCH.

There is also a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for NHS Grampian which is based on a number of sites including RCH and the RACH, and which provides out patient care to the most ill children and adolescents in the Grampian area whilst liasing with the regional CAMHS in patient unit which is based in Dundee.
