Brooks-Carter Clinic was founded by Maggie Brooks-Carter DO RGN SMTO and Nick Carter DO MBRA FSMTO and has been in practice for over 30 years in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen. Through personal and professional experience Maggie Brooks-Carter feels that Osteopathy and other Massage-based Therapies should be at the core of Healthcare. Before the drugs (and all their side effects) and before the surgery -

we advocate: TRY OSTEOPATHY AND MASSAGE FIRST! Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

A 2026 open access protocol, no results yet, describes a mixed methods feasibility trial testing ScarWork for post breast surgery pain syndrome in early stage breast cancer survivors in an NHS setting. Forty participants are randomised to usual care or up to five ScarWork sessions. The main outcomes are feasibility and acceptability, with short term measures of pain, scar symptoms, function, and wellbeing.

Some promotional materials describe specific mechanisms and strong outcomes, for example ideas about ‘integrating’ scars, or changes being ‘fast’ and ‘permanent’. These are testable claims. A feasibility protocol is a valuable first step, but it cannot confirm mechanisms or effectiveness, so it should not be used to justify confident marketing statements. The protocol also reports financial support from ScarWork UK, which is simply important context when interpreting future published results. ✅

Takeaway for therapists ✅🤲🎗️
Scar focused care can support comfort, sensitivity, and confidence in movement. Stay method neutral, prioritise consent and comfort, and avoid mechanism stories or guaranteed outcomes until results are published and replicated.

Elizabeth Forsyth is participating in this year’s London Marathon, April 2026. She is supporting the local charity Archway, which provides vital support to people with learning disabilities.
Recent cuts in funding from local authorities meant that many vital services for this group are under threat, so any contributions would be welcome to help Liz to achieve her aim of meeting her fundraising target for this local charity.

Any contribution’s contributions you can make would be welcome
