The Archie Foundation

The Archie Foundation Transforming experiences and outcomes for babies, children and their families.

Making the Difference’ for close to 100,000 patients every year, the ARCHIE Foundation provides all of the extras that allow an enhanced level of care for local children. We provide key staff posts such as the ARCHIE Specialist Nurse, the ARCHIE Play Leader and the ARCHIE Family Support Worker. We buy life changing medical equipment and fund specialist training to ensure the local healthcare teams can always provide the most up-to-date and high quality care. We buy toys, books and computer games, run art workshops and provide musical concerts in the hospital – often at the bedside of children who are too sick to come to our communal play areas.

As NICU Awareness Month comes to an end, we want to keep the support going.

This World Prematurity Day (17th November), we are inviting you to host an Archie Prematuri-Tea. It doesn’t have to be on the day itself, any time in November is perfect. Gather friends, family, or colleagues for tea and cake, and help raise vital funds for babies and their families facing the challenges of prematurity.

It’s a simple way to make a real difference 💙

In celebration of NICU Awareness Month, our volunteers Reti, Sarah and Ria hosted a pizza afternoon in the neonatal unit 💚

It was a lovely change of scenery for families going through a difficult time, and just one small way we can support the neonatal unit here in Aberdeen. Our volunteers were delighted to spend the afternoon with families, chatting with families and sharing a few smiles.

A huge thank you to Revolution Aberdeen for generously supplying the pizzas, they were absolutely delicious and such a treat, loved by all (including the staff)! 🍕

This Saturday we wish to highlight a very special fundraiser coming up in October. Portleticos FC in Portlethen is planning a 24h long football match, which will see people taking hour slots to play a game of 5 aside.

Loyal member of the football club Jordan Tait and his family have a very personal connection to the neonatal unit after their twins, Jude and Harris, spent time there following their birth.

Jordan and Bethan shared their experience:

“The most special and exciting day of our lives became quite a worrying one when the boys were taken up to the NICU.

However, after the initial shock and panic, our minds were instantly put at ease by every single member of the team. Everything they were doing was explained to myself and Bethan, and every question we had was answered in an easy-to-understand but professional manner.

I’ll never be able to put into words how grateful I am for how kind, caring, and hardworking everyone was to us and the boys during their time in there.

I’m so delighted that the team have decided to raise money for the Aberdeen neonatal unit because I’ve seen first-hand how much they do for the babies that have to start life in there.”

We are hugely grateful to Portleticos FC for choosing to support both The Archie Foundation and The Larder in Portlethen through this incredible 24-hour football match.

Thank you for helping make a difference 💙

This week, as part of NICU Awareness Month, we would like to share some kind words from a neonatal parent to Heather, our neonatal counsellor:

“I’d like to express my sincere gratitude for the support and encouragement you gave me during my baby’s time in the neonatal unit. Your regular visits, kind words, and genuine concern meant so much to me and helped me stay strong through those challenging days.

I’m delighted to let you know that we have now been discharged, and my baby is doing very well. This milestone is such a blessing, and I wanted to share it with you because your care and guidance were truly part of this journey.

Thank you once again for being such a wonderful source of comfort and reassurance. I deeply appreciate all that you do.”

We are so grateful to this parent for sharing their experience, it’s always so special to receive feedback like this. Heather’s role is such an important part of the support we provide in the neonatal unit, and we are incredibly proud to have her alongside families during what can be one of the most challenging times of their lives. Her services are a crucial part of our care, ensuring that neonatal families know they are never alone.

Heather provides person-centred counselling in the neonatal unit, with support that often continues beyond a family’s time in hospital.

Have you or someone close to you experienced similar support in the neonatal unit? We’d love to hear your story as we come together to mark NICU Awareness Month 💙

In August, your support helped us brighten hospital spaces, provide essentials for families, and fund special items that make life a little easier for children with medical needs and those receiving healthcare support. All this among many other things we were able to supply. 💜

Thank you for making a real difference! ✨

If things feel hard right now, please reach out. We’re here for you 💙

This Supporter Sunday we wish to highlight a very special golf day from July this year ⛳

The first ever Martin Ritchie Memorial Golf Day was a wonderful tribute to a much-loved husband, dad and friend. From early morning bacon rolls to an evening of prizegiving, raffles and auctions, the day brought together family, friends and colleagues in Martin’s memory.

We were honoured to be chosen as one of the charities to benefit, with part of the incredible total raised being donated to our Bereavement Service. This support will help us to be there for families facing the most difficult of times.

It was a privilege to welcome Martin’s wife Susan, and their children Erin and Aiden, as they presented their donation, a truly special gesture that ensures Martin’s legacy will continue to make a difference for others.

A heartfelt thank you to Martin Sinclair who organised the day, Martin's family, and everyone who took part and offered their support to make this event happen 💙

September is NICU Awareness Month; this time we would like to highlight a service we help provide for neonatal families in Tayside – our snack box for parents 💚

When a baby is in neonatal care, parents can find themselves on the unit at any time of day or night. With limited and often costly food options in the hospital, having something close at hand can make a real difference. That is why we want to ensure families in neonatal have access to food and snacks whenever they need them.

The feedback speaks volumes:

“Having snacks for the parents has really helped parents to stay longer and be with their babies without leaving the unit.” – Infant Feeding Advisor

“The snack box has been a life saver. I had to come in through the night and ended up staying – it was so good not to have to go routing through the hospital to get something to eat.” – Parent

The snack box has been a great success, and thanks to feedback from parents, we’ve taken it a step further, now providing snacks for families in transitional care, as well as additional treats through a daily drink trolley.

It may seem like a small gesture, but it’s one that brings comfort, eases worry, and helps parents spend more time with their babies. 💜

Archie has had the best day ever! We were so excited to get a phone call from Aberdeen Football Club - would the children & families at Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital like to see the Scottish Cup trophy?

The answer was YES PLEASE - and not only that, Dons Captain Graeme Shinnie brought along some of the team to say hello.

There have been smiles right across RACH today, as the Dons carried the Scottish Cup to every area - from Oncology to Accident & Emergency. One lucky lad even had his newly plastered leg signed by the players - what a story to tell when he sees his friends. A grinning Dad held his baby up for a special photo - she might not remember it, but Dad will never forget!

A huge thank you to all at AFC and especially the team for making this day so special - these memories mean everything to the children & families, and we appreciate your kindness & generosity of spirit so much ❤️ 🤍 ❤️
