Today we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming five lovely visitors from Aotearoa (New Zealand 💚🇳🇿) to Earthstore.co.uk 💎

Here exploring the beauty of Scotland and their family connections in Aberdeen (& Glasgow)… I’m so thankful for their presence.

Our conversation took a meaningful turn as they shared the story of Pounamu, the sacred green jade that is deeply woven into Māori culture. 💚

🌿 Pounamu, also known as New Zealand jade and greenstone, is more than just a stone… it’s known as a taonga (treasure).

✨ Traditionally gifted with intention, Pounamu carries deep spiritual significance, representing strength, protection, connection to ancestors, and peace. It’s often carved into pendants and passed down through generations.

Found only in the rivers of the South Island, especially in the West Coast region, which is why the island is named Te Waipounamu, which translates to “the waters of greenstone”. 🌊💚💎

Each piece is unique - infused with stories, symbolism, and the wairua (spirit) of the land.

Anna was wearing a Manawa (heart) shaped necklace - she has had this for many many years and could see it felt so dear to her 🫶

The Heart is associated with unity, the expression of our true feelings and most loving connections. This shape is often gifted to those with BIG hearts, people who are selfless that deserve to be reminded that life is better off with them in it.

Then seeing each family member’s treasure around their necks, with the different shapes that had been carved, stirred something in me to begin researching and understanding the spiritual meaning.

Such a beautiful family, they radiated the feeling and vibration of love & kindness... and having read more about Pounamu, I feel it has awakened something in me and can feel the spiritual significance and reverence for this beautiful treasure of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

We’re so grateful for the beautiful energy they brought to the space, and for sharing this sacred tradition with us. Tēnā koutou 🌍💚
