An interesting example this week in the Manchester United vs Anderlecht game at Old Trafford, was the two major injuries sustained by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo.....

Both are probable ACL tears, the interesting thing about the first one that Marcos Rojo sustained, was that it fits a pattern that many patient report.......he injured his knee, felt he was ok to go on again, then had a second episode when running and couldn't carry on......this is a normal mechanism for an ACL rupture, a first insult causes instability in the ligament but not enough to rupture or feel like they have to stop with injury and a second trauma when the ligament ruptures due to the injury sustained in the first insult.

The second injury was to Manchester United's talisman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Zlatan is an athlete and trains extremely hard to maintain his fitness and physique to stay on top of his game, he is extremely strong and works on all aspects of fitness.....however an innocuous landing, which he has done many times before, on to a stable service, caused his leg to hyperextend and rupture his ACL.....he has played every minute of nearly all matches for United this season and injuries himself at the end of normal time, in a way that his strength and size of his leg musculature should easily control shows the effect fatigue has on joint stability and injury causation.

This game highlighted:

1. The 2 stage insult that patients report when presenting with ACL injuries.
2. The preventable effects of fatigue that contribute to serous injury, especially of the ACL.

One we reported on a while ago.....one of the most common questions 'is it bad to crack my knuckles/joints?'.....and the answer is....NO

When muscle joints are pulled apart there forms a tiny cavity filled with gas which then collapses, creating a popping noise.
