Let's talk post op care!

You're had an operation, maybe weeks, months or years ago. But, your scar and surrounding area feels odd.

Sometimes it’s a pulling when you stand up tall.
Sometimes it’s an overhang above your C-section scar that doesn’t seem to shift no matter what you try.
Sometimes it’s numbness, tenderness, or a strange disconnected feeling.
Sometimes you can't look at it or touch it.

You seek medical support to be told
“It’s healed.”

Unfortunately post op care isn't always as we'd like or we need. Often a scar is just a small part of a bigger issue.

But you know your body.
And if something still feels tight or uncomfortable, that matters.

After any surgery, whether that’s a C-section, hysterectomy, cancer surgery, abdominal or orthopaedic procedure — the body heals in layers. Skin may close beautifully on the outside, but deeper tissues can still feel restricted.

That restriction can quietly affect how you move, how you breathe, how your core engages, even how comfortable you feel in your clothes.

In clinic and in conversations outside clinic, I have heard:

“It feels stuck and pulls.”
“I can’t fully stretch without discomfort.”
“My tummy doesn’t feel like mine anymore.”
“I feel this little shelf above the scar.”
“It’s not painful… but it doesn’t feel right.”

"I didn't even know scar therapy was a thing?"

You’re not being picky.
You’re not imagining it, even if you are told everything is healed.
And you’re not alone.

At SPL Clinic, scar therapy is gentle and respectful. We work with the tissues, not against them. The aim isn’t to force change — it’s to encourage mobility, softness and better movement over time.

We look at how the scar is affecting you functionally — your posture, your breath, your core, your confidence — and support your body in feeling more at ease again.

It doesn’t matter if your scar is recent or many years old.
If something feels tight, stuck or unsettled, it deserves care.

Your scar tells part of your story.
It deserves to feel comfortable in your body.

“Mum pouch.”
“Overhang.”
“Apron belly.”
"Pooch."

Whatever you call it — if you’ve had a Caesarean birth, you might be noticing that shelf of tissue sitting above your scar.

And no… it’s not just about weight.

After a Caesarean birth, the layers of skin, fat, fascia and uterus are cut through.
As your body heals, scar tissue forms.

If that scar becomes tight, stuck or restricted, it can:

• Create pulling through the lower abdomen
• Disrupt lymphatic drainage (hello swelling)
• Affect abdominal muscle activation
• Contribute to that “overhang” appearance
• Leave you feeling disconnected from your core

This isn’t about “doing more crunches.”
It’s about how your scar is healing underneath the surface.

Scar therapy works by gently releasing adhesions, improving tissue glide, supporting lymphatic flow and helping your abdominal wall function more effectively.

Many women tell me:
“I thought this was just how my body was now.”

It doesn’t have to be.

If you’re 6 months, 6 years or 16 years post Caesarean birth — it’s not too late to improve how your scar feels and functions.

Fascia is AMAZING… and most people have never heard of it.

Fascia is the thin, strong, web-like connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, organ, nerve and blood vessel in your body.

It connects everything to everything.

It’s why your C-section scar can affect your pelvic floor.
It’s why an abdominal scar can contribute to back pain.
It’s why swelling can feel tight far away from the actual surgery site.

When fascia is healthy, it’s:
✨ Elastic
✨ Hydrated
✨ Glidey and mobile

But when you have surgery, trauma, inflammation or swelling…

The fascia can become:
⚡ Tight
⚡ Stuck
⚡ Restricted
⚡ Overprotective

And because fascia works as one continuous system, that restriction doesn’t just stay at the scar.

It can:
• Alter posture
• Change breathing patterns
• Affect pelvic floor function
• Contribute to persistent pain
• Impact lymphatic flow

A scar isn’t “just a line on the skin.”
It’s a change in the fascial network.

The good news?
Fascia responds beautifully to the right kind of therapy.

With skilled, gentle scar and fascial work, we can:
✔ Improve mobility
✔ Reduce tightness
✔ Support lymphatic drainage
✔ Help your nervous system feel safer
✔ Restore better function

Your body is incredibly intelligent.
Sometimes it just needs the right input.

If you’ve had:
• C-section
• Hysterectomy
• Abdominal surgery
• Orthopaedic surgery
• Injury or trauma

And things still don’t feel “right” — fascia could be the missing piece.

Let's talk hysterectomy and caesaean births!

A few years ago I had a total hysterectomy as a cancer preventative 'treatment' following borderline ovarian cancerous tumour. The information I was provided with was minimal and I had little awareness of the recovery period apart from a single sheet of wonky paper outlining a few advisory lines of text. I had 3 caesaean births, the same minimal preparatory advice and sheet of paper outlining recovery. I had zero emotional support.

Hysterectomy and caesaean births are often described as “routine."

They are still:
Major abdominal or pelvic surgery.

Recovery can include:
• Hormonal shifts
• Core weakness
• Scar restriction
• Pelvic floor & body changes
• Emotional processing

Healing takes longer than expected.

The medics don't often tell you the whole story regarding recovery and impact on adhesions, pelvic floor changes, core changes, overhang of stomach and hormonal shifts. And we don't often know the questions to ask.

The good news is you don't have to put up with adhesions, pain and pulling of scars or pelvic floor shifts and the impact they have on our function and emotional wellbeing.

Your scar is not “just skin.”

Underneath a scar are layers:

• Skin
• Fascia
• Muscle
• Nerves
• Sometimes organs

Scar tissue is less elastic and can stick to surrounding structures. Years later this can cause:

• Pulling sensations and pain
• Back or pelvic pain
• Bladder urgency
• Tight hips
• Reduced core strength

If your scar feels tight, numb, lumpy, or sensitive — your body may still be adapting.

Scar therapy isn’t cosmetic. It’s functional.

Many clients see a difference after just 1 session.

Does your skin ever feel like it’s wearing a shirt that’s two sizes too small? 👕🎗️

After oncology surgery or radiation, many people expect the "healing" to be over once the incisions close. But for many, that’s when the tightness, pulling, and restricted movement really begin.

As an Occupational Therapist and dual-certified Oncology and General Scar Therapist, I’m here to tell you: Your scar doesn’t have to dictate your range of motion.

Why Scar Tissue "Pulls"

When the body heals, it creates collagen fibers to mend the gap. Think of healthy tissue like a neatly brushed head of hair. Scar tissue is more like a matted knot.

Left untreated, it can:

* Limit how high you can reach (crucial for getting dressed or reaching the top shelf!).
* Cause "cording" (Axillary Web Syndrome) after breast surgery.
* Create discomfort or numbness in the surrounding area.
* Affect your posture and breathing.
How I Can Help You Reclaim Your Movement

In my practice, we don't just "rub" the scar. We use specialized, gentle techniques to remodel the tissue from the inside out.

* Myofascial Release: Gently stretching the connective tissue to create "space" under the skin.
* Desensitization: Helping the nervous system calm down if the scar feels painful or "weird" to the touch.
* Functional Mobility: As an OT, I look at the big picture. We work on the specific movements you need to get back to the hobbies and daily tasks you love.
* Education: I teach you how to safely manage your own tissue at home.

It’s Never Too Late

Whether your surgery was six weeks ago or six years ago, scar tissue is living, breathing material. It can be changed. You’ve been through enough—don’t let a tight scar hold you back from moving freely in your "new normal."

Ready to start moving without the "pulling"?

Message me or visit www.splclinic.co.uk to book a consultation. Let’s get you feeling comfortable in your own skin again. 🕊️💪
