Most cases of lower back pain are mechanical and not caused by anything serious — even when the pain feels intense.
At the clinic, one of the most important parts of a consultation is making sure there are no “red flag” symptoms that could suggest a more serious underlying issue requiring medical attention.
Some of the things we routinely ask about and assess include:
• Unexplained weight loss
• Recent significant trauma or falls
• Changes in bladder or bowel function
• Numbness around the saddle/groin area
• Progressive weakness in the legs
• Severe night pain or pain that is constantly worsening
• History of cancer
• Fever, illness, or signs of infection
• Pain that doesn’t change with movement or rest
• Loss of balance or changes in walking
Most people we see do NOT have these symptoms, and in many cases back pain responds well to the right management, movement, and treatment approach.
If you’re struggling with back pain and aren’t sure what’s causing it, we’re always happy to help assess things properly and point you in the right direction.
