I wrote a poem for today. I write a poem every Mother’s Day. Well, in fact I write poems a lot of days each week - I don’t know if that’s something I’ve shared on here?! - but especially every Mother’s Day. Which is a beautiful day, but also difficult for so many.

I shared it on my personal account but then remembered I can’t share it from there as it’s private, so here it is again. Apologies to those of you who follow me on both!

Enjoy today, and be gentle with yourself if you cannot.

———————————————

If you look for your baby in rainbows
in robins or the stars
If your windowsill is bursting
or you’re missing little cards
If your arms are filled with heartbeats
or the emptiness between
This day belongs to you
Let me tell you, you are seen.

If your house is filled with laughter
and the pattering of feet
or a suffocating silence
that you just can’t defeat.
If you spent this morning with a child
when there should be two or more
This day still belongs to you,
let me tell you, I am sure.

If your baby lives in photographs,
sat upon the side,
or in your deepest wishes,
in the fear that you can’t hide.
If your child now lives in memories,
no longer within your hands,
This day still belongs to you,
and when it’s hard, I understand.

Breathe it in, and breathe it out
this day will soon pass by
if you want to then savour it,
but it’s also fine to cry.
Make what you want of it,
But no matter what, be filled with pride,
for today belongs to all of you,
with children here and those who died.

~ Perinatal Anatomy & Physiology ~

🕊 I passed my certificate in perinatal anatomy and physiology. 🎉

🕊 It was a really in depth module - I wrote almost as many words as my university dissertation by the time the coursework was done! - and makes up part of my hypnobirthing training, but is a certificate in its own right too.

🕊 I really enjoyed completing the work and expanding my knowledge on the human body.

🕊 The module included understanding the workings of our cardiovascular and respiratory systems, understanding our muscle make up, the human skeleton amongst other things. It was a really enjoyable module and this certificate will hopefully help you feel confident that when I am talking about your body and the changes during pregnancy and postnatally there’s the knowledge behind me to support it ☺️

🕊 if you’d like to book a course with me the link is in my bio. Feel free to contact me for a no obligation chat if you have any questions!

🕊 If you want to speak to me about any of my courses and if they’d be right to you, send me a DM or an email and I’d be happy to answer any questions - obligation free!

~ Review ~

🕊 Last weekend I ran a double workshop for a really lovely pregnant mama and this review she has left has made my heart happy!

🕊 It’s daunting starting up on your own. It’s slow going sometimes. It’s a lot of work. But this is why it’s all worthwhile. Doing something that I love and knowing that I’m genuinely helping other people - it’s all I could ask for ❤️

🕊 This Mama did both my Planning for Postnatal and Preparing to Breastfeed courses back to back - you can take her advice and book them too following the link in my bio! Can’t wait to meet more of you soon 🥰

~ Hand Expressing ~

🕊 Hand expressing is a really useful skill to have, even if you’re planning to exclusively breast or chest feed without expressing. Here I’ve done a little demonstration (using my lovely knitted b**b 🍈) on how to do so.

🕊 Please share with anyone who might find this useful and show it some love.

🕊 If you’d like to learn more about preparing to feed your babies you can book a preparing to feed course with me on the link in my bio 🤱

~ Hello 👋🏻 ~

🕊 It’s not actually been too long since I last introduced myself, however there’s been a few new faces around here - most of you have come over from the huge giveaway on page right now, I’m very much looking forward to working with the winner (if you haven’t seen it definitely get on that!) - so I thought I’d do another little introduction

🕊 I’m Rosie, I’m 30, and I live in Oxfordshire with my husband and our two sons, who are 4 and 1. We also have a little angel baby who we lost between the boys, Olivia. She is the inspiration for the business name. It’s her second birthday this Sunday 👼🏼

🕊 I have completed fourth trimester well-being practitioner training with Wildflower Education] and have been hosting 1:1 fourth trimester / postnatal planning sessions with parents and pregnant people since January and I LOVE it.

🕊 I have just added infant feeding support to my skill set with a level 1 & 2 in Breastfeeding Supporter training, so will be offering preparing to breast/chest feed workshops too.

🕊 I’m also studying to be a hypnobirthing instructor with Wildflower Education] so look out for those courses coming soon!

🕊 I am a huge believer in ‘informed is best’, for all birthing and parenting decisions, so you will find no judgment here for the ways you choose to birth or feed your children - I want to support everyone with the correct, up to date information, skills & knowledge to make the best choices for them & their families. Knowledge is empowering, and with it so should birth and parenting be. 💪🏻

🕊 I love animals. We have a dog called Nigel and a rabbit called Bruce. But the dog behaves like a cat and the rabbit behaves like a dog 🤪

🕊 I was a huge baby (those of you who’ve been here a while will know this one already) but also a premature baby… weighing in at a hefty 10lbs 7oz - at just 36 weeks!

🕊 I have a bordering on unhealthy obsession with Bruce Springsteen. I wrote my dissertation on him, and if you ever zoom with me from my office you’ll spot a painting of him behind me, cheering me on 😅

So that’s a bit about me.. I’d love you to tell me something about you? Come say hi below ⬇️

~ Breastfeeding Support ~

🕊 My certificate for Level 1 Breastfeeding Support has come through. I completed this last weekend and found it was a really great foundation for my work supporting breast and chest feeding parents.

🕊 Part 3 of my Level 2 training is tonight. I’m looking forward to completing this to add far more in depth feeding knowledge and understanding to what I can offer clients and to supporting lots of parents on their journeys.

~ World Down’s Syndrome Day ~

🕊 Today is world Down’s syndrome day

🕊 World Down’s Syndrome Day is held on the 21st of March in recognition of down’s syndrome being Trisomy 21 - when someone is born with 3 (hence trisomy), rather than the usual 2, of their 21st Chromosome.

🕊 Down’s syndrome occurs because of the extra 21st chromosome. This is something that is believed to happen by chance, due to a change in either the s***m or the egg, meaning that rather than becoming a pair like most chromosomes, triplication occurs and they become a three.

🕊 Down’s Syndrome does not occur because of any lifestyle choices made by the birthing parent either before or during pregnancy.

🕊 It is not thought to be hereditary (to run in families)

🕊 A baby with down’s syndrome can be born to anyone, though the likelihood is higher as the birthing parent ages.

🕊 In the UK, everyone will be offered screening for down’s syndrome during their pregnancy.

🕊 Screening, like all tests and procedures, is 100% optional. You do not have to undergo screening if you do not wish to, or you may prefer to. You can discuss this with your healthcare provider.

🕊 If you choose to undergo screening and it is found your baby has an increased likelihood of having down’s syndrome, you may be offered further tests to confirm. These too are optional.

🕊 People with down’s syndrome will have some level of learning disability (the severity of which varies on an individual basis) and often some accompanying physical medical needs, however this does not mean they cannot and will not have full and meaningful lives.

🕊 It can be daunting to learn that your child will likely have additional needs. Information and support can be found from many charities and organisations, as well as the nhs / your healthcare provider.

~ Breast / Chest feeding hormones ~

🕊 Milk production & milk secretion is controlled by the hormones oxytocin & prolactin

🕊You may remember Oxytocin from your birth prep - this powerful love hormone is what keeps those contractions strong and regular, and it’s what kick starts your milk production.

🕊 Women and birthing people who are highly stressed or frightened may find their milk production lessening, due to cortisol and adrenaline inhibiting the production of oxytocin.

🕊 so how do oxytocin & prolactin work together?

🕊 Oxytocin - sometimes referred to as the ‘love hormone’ - is released when you bring your baby to the breast / chest

🕊 Oxytocin is not only released when a baby is attached and suckling, but when the mother or birthing parent expects to feed - it is linked to the mother / birthing parent seeing, touching, holding & smelling their baby, and even thinking lovingly about them.

🕊 The release of Oxytocin then stimulates Prolactin production and secretion.

🕊 Prolactin is responsible for the production and secretion of milk in the breast / chest. So the more the baby is held, is fed responsively and is brought to the breast or chest, the more oxytocin is released, the more prolactin is secreted into the blood and the more milk is produced.

🕊 Then it’s back to Oxytocin to trigger the Milk Ejection Reflex (sometimes referred to as the letdown reflex).

🕊 The milk ejection reflex causes the milk in the breast / chest to flow along and fill the ducts, and helps the baby access the milk more easily.

🕊 Et Voila! Milk is flowing, baby is feeding…

Look out for infant feeding / preparing to breast or chest feed consultations and courses on my website soon 🥰

19/03/2022

In celebration of me adding infant feeding, breast / chest feeding support to my work, I’ve decided to reshare this video you helped me make for World Breastfeeding Week 2021. I asked for pictures of you breast / chest feeding and / or feeding your babies human milk via bottle or syringe and you did not disappoint.

I am really excited to work with families and support them to make informed feeding decisions and to thrive in their breast / chest feeding journeys ♥️

Thank you again to everyone who sent me pictures to help me make this video. .alice .and.cubs
