Mental Health Awareness Training today!

We covered:
•What mental health is
•Different mental health conditions
•Stigma, stereotyping and discrimination
•Regulations
•Signs and symptoms of poor mental health
•Causes and factors of mental health illness
•Support and treatments

The team engaged in many activities this morning including sharing how they were feeling today, a simulation of living with schizophrenia, identifying famous people, their conditions and recognising their platform, wearing a mask and declaring how they portray themselves and what’s really going on under the mask, a “who do you love” exercise to see how many write down MYSELF (not many 😢)

Well done to the team for being so open and vulnerable today. We had some great conversations and shared some valuable experiences.

This session is not just good practice for supporting Service users with mental health conditions but also looking after ourselves and eachother.

The team left the session with some information on our bupa well-being programme which is completely free, confidential and accessible to them whenever and if ever they need mental health support.

Today’s training focused on safe and effective administration of eye drops, ear drops, and transdermal patches 👁️👂

These may seem like simple tasks, but correct technique, infection control, and understanding medication delivery are essential to ensure safety, comfort, and effectiveness for Service users.

At Train to Care Oxfordshire, we don’t cut corners when it comes to training. We make sure teams are confident, competent, and delivering care to the highest standard every time 💙

• Safe use of feeding pumps and equipment

Today’s training session!

We covered the application of creams to the largest organ of our body. You may think that training staff in applying creams to skin is like teaching a duck to suck eggs, but the truth is that there is far more to it than people realise.

We covered:
•Products and their benefits
•Hazards and precautions
•Allergic reactions and procedures
•Hygiene and infection control
•The finger tip unit (FTU)
•A variety of skin conditions
•Staff sign off to apply steroids
•Documentation and reporting

It’s always a good reminder that great results don’t come from guesswork, they come from knowledge, consistency, and using the right products for the right reasons.

Epilepsy Rescue Medication training today, focusing on the safe administration of Buccal midazolam.

We covered:
• Different types of seizures
• Recognising prolonged seizures and when rescue medication is required
• Causes and triggers
• Correct dosing and administration of Buccal midazolam
• Benefits and side effects of Buccal midazolam
• Monitoring and aftercare following a seizure
• When to escalate and seek emergency support
• The importance of following individual epilepsy care plans
• SUDEP

Staff need to be signed off and deemed competent to administer emergency medication and these sessions are so important for building confidence in staff and ensuring people with epilepsy receive safe, timely support during a seizure.

And of course, training is always better with a few hot crumpets and pastries to keep everyone going when you deliver training first thing.

Yesterday we delivered compression hosiery training!

This is a practical session that staff require signing off for and many care providers do not train their team on how to apply compression 😬

While the technique for application is important, we also need to be aware of the reasons compression hosiery is prescribed, the risks of cardiac overload, how often they should be renewed and reviewed, what to look out for on the skin and who to report concerns to.

While the team can now apply stockings, we also looked at different garments such as wraps. These tasks require person specific training and each Support worker will need signing off individually with each Service user that requires them.

Oh and the best part was the bacon buttys all round 😋

Dysphagia training today ✔️

We delivered training on Community Dysphagia Management (a Portable Health Care Skill), focusing on safe support for adults living at home who may have compromised swallow.

We covered:
• Understanding dysphagia and aspiration
• Recognising risk and emergency signs
• Safe food and fluid modification
• Thickening fluids appropriately
• Delegated health care responsibilities

As the learners care for Service users that require modified diets they will be able to apply learning immediately which strengthens confidence and makes it relevant to day to day practice to ensure care is safe and person-centred.

In-house training makes a real difference when supporting complex needs at home. There is much more to signing staff off to add thickener to fluids. It’s important to understand aspiration, safe swallow techniques, why oral hygiene is important, choking management, medication and so much more that is involved.

We are proud to provide the best care training, training you won’t find anywhere else!

Today, we delivered inhaler administration training.

In care, assumptions are risky. Not everyone knows how to support inhaler use correctly, and getting it wrong can mean medication isn’t administered properly.

Some care providers expect staff to “just know” how to support inhaler use and some GPs expect patients to know too. So……..

We train.
We don’t assume.
We refresh skills regularly.

This is what safe, Outstanding care looks like. Because effective care requires knowledge, not guesswork.

Inhalers aren’t “self-explanatory”. Care should never be either.

That’s why teams should receive dedicated training, so people are supported safely, correctly, and with confidence.

Outstanding care means never assuming competence. It means proving it.
