Why do we need you to give blood?

Giving blood saves lives. Your blood is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments. We need new blood donors from all backgrounds to ensure the right blood is available for patients who need it.

At Give Blood, they need:
Nearly 400 new donors a day to meet the demand
Around 135,000 new donors a year to replace those who can no longer donate
40,000 more black donors to meet the growing demand for better-matched blood
30,000 new donors with priority blood types such as O negative every year
More young people to start giving blood so we can make sure we have enough blood in the future

Just 1 hour of your time can help save up to 3 lives! You can register for blood donation at https://my.blood.co.uk/your-account/pre-registration

You'll be sent an invitation letter in the post when it's time to book your cervical screening appointment.
It's Cervical Screening Awareness Week, 20th - 26th!

Your letter will tell you where to go for cervical screening and how to book. Most cervical screening is done by a female nurse or doctor in a GP surgery. In some parts of England, you may be able to go to a local sexual health clinic instead. Call your GP surgery to book an appointment with them. You might be able to book the appointment online.

You may hear a cervical screening be referred to as a 'smear test.'

The two terms can seem interchangeable, but there is a marked difference between an individual with learning difficulties and one with learning disabilities. It can be challenging for someone who is thought to have one when they have the other to receive the right care, so understanding the difference as a carer/friend/relative is key!

MentalHealth.org differentiates between the two as follows:
- a learning disability constitutes a condition which affects learning and intelligence across all areas of life
- a learning difficulty constitutes a condition which creates an obstacle to a specific form of learning but does not affect the overall IQ of an individual

If you have concerns that you or someone you know, such as a family member, may have a learning disability or learning difficulty, you should discuss this with your GP.

Diabetes is a condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.

There are 2 main types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes – a lifelong condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
Type 2 diabetes – where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to insulin properly

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, over 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2. High blood sugar that develops during pregnancy is known as gestational diabetes. It usually goes away after giving birth.

Insect bites and stings will usually cause a red, swollen lump to develop on the skin. This may be painful and, in some cases, can be very itchy. The symptoms will generally improve within a few hours or days, although sometimes, they can last a little longer. An allergic reaction can occur, causing symptoms such as breathing difficulties, dizziness and a swollen face or mouth. This requires immediate medical treatment.

What to do if you've been bitten or stung?

To treat an insect bite or sting:
- remove the sting or tick if it's still in the skin
- wash the affected area with soap and water
- apply a cold compress (such as a flannel or cloth cooled with cold water) or an ice pack to any swelling for at least 10 minutes
- raise or elevate the affected area if possible, as this can help reduce swelling
- avoid scratching the area, to reduce the risk of infection
- avoid traditional home remedies, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, as they're unlikely to help

The pain, swelling and itchiness can sometimes last a few days. Ask your pharmacist about medicines that can help, such as painkillers, creams for itching and antihistamines.

As part of Child Safety Week, 6th - 12th June, we are raising awareness around child/baby first aid! As you start weaning your baby, they may be at risk of choking. Find out what to look for and what to do. When a baby is choking, their airway is partly or completely blocked, meaning they may be unable to breathe properly. As you start weaning your baby and they begin eating solid foods or playing with small objects, they may be at risk of choking.

Signs and symptoms - A choking baby may:
- unable to breathe, cry, or cough
- have a red puffy face
- show signs of distress.

If your baby is under one year old, this advice will help you to know what to do if they choke https://www.sja.org.uk/get-advice/first-aid-advice/choking/baby-choking/
