Calling all men 65 and over – have you heard of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening?

You might not know this, but the NHS offers a free screening to all men in the UK during the year they turn 65. This screening is an ultrasound which looks for an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), which is where the walls of the aorta get weak and swell up. 1 in 92 men will have an AAA.
If an AAA gets too big it can burst, and chances of surviving this are less than 20%. They have no symptoms so screening is the only way to catch it – you can then be monitored and treated before it causes any problems.
Keep an eye out for your invitation in the post – screening could save your life!
If you are over 65 and have never been screened, contact your AAA screening team on 0191 445 8747 to book an appointment at an NHS site near you. Visit www.gatesheadhealth.nhs.uk/services/aaa/ for more information, and watch our AAA Video: https://fb.watch/7tORZvND2n/

Men of Lancashire and South Cumbria – can you spare 10 minutes? It could save your life!

When you turn 65, the NHS invites you to be screened for an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA). This is where the walls of the aorta weaken with age and swell up – if you have one and it bursts, it is likely to be fatal. An AAA has no symptoms, so getting screened is the only way to find out if you have one.
Screening is a quick and pain free ultrasound, and you find out your results there and then. You will automatically receive your invitation in the post – please don’t ignore it! It could save your life.
If you are over 65 and have never been screened, you can still make an appointment by calling your AAA screening team on 0191 445 8747. You can also call this number if you need to rearrange your appointment.

Are you a man aged 65 or older? A 10-minute scan could save your life!
Men’s Health Week (9th – 16th June) is all about raising awareness of men’s physical and mental health, and we want to talk about a condition that many men may not be aware of.
As you get older, the walls of the abdominal aorta – the main blood vessel that runs from your heart down to your stomach – can weaken and swell up. This swelling is called an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), and is 6 times more likely to occur in men than women. If an AAA gets too big it can burst, which is dangerous and life-threatening. There are no symptoms, and the best way to find one is to be screened.
When you turn 65, the NHS automatically invites you to be screened for an AAA. This is a 10-minute ultrasound scan, which can help catch an AAA early so it can be monitored and treated. It happens at a local clinic, and is easy, quick, and pain free! If you are over 65 and have never been screened, you can book an appointment by calling the Lancashire and South Cumbria screening team on 0191 445 8747.
Watch this short video which shows you what an AAA is: https://fb.watch/7tORZvND2n/ and visit www.gatehseadhealth.nhs.uk/services/aaa for more information on screening and what happens if an AAA is found.
Happy Men’s Health Week to all!
