In our final post on language for World Down Syndrome Day, we are looking at how we describe people who do not have Down syndrome.

It is common to hear the word "normal" used as a comparison. However, we advocate for using terms like "typically developing" or "typical."

Why avoid the word "normal"?
💙Language of Exclusion: If one group is "normal," it suggests that others are "abnormal" or "broken." This creates an "us vs. them" barrier that fuels loneliness.
💛Diversity is Typical: In reality, human diversity is completely typical! Having an extra chromosome is simply a different "instruction manual" for the body, not an illness or a deviation from being a valued person.
💙Fostering Belonging: When we stop using "normal" as a benchmark, we move closer to a world where every person—regardless of their genetic makeup—is seen as a standard, valued member of society.

True connection grows when we lead with respect and empathy.

Let’s stand by using language that makes space for everyone to belong. 🤝💙

POLICE OFFICER ➡️ SUPPORT WORKER

Support worker Dan's career story is a perfect example of how skills from a different career can be well-suited to social care.

Read how he seamlessly swapped protecting various Prime Ministers, ambassadors, and members of the Royal Family, to empowering the people he supports at Jamesons Care, in Colchester, to live their best lives. It’s a career move he doesn’t regret 🫶💜

A few weeks ago, our marketing team visited Ashbrook, one of our specialist neurological services located in Rochdale. It was brilliant to spend time with some of the people living at Ashbrook and the brilliant expert support team, capturing everyday moments of support on camera 📸

Here are just a few of those moments 🥰

Thank you to everyone at Ashbrook for such a warm welcome 💜
