As it's Raynaud's Awareness Month, it's time to talk about the importance of taking care of your feet and how they can be involved in the onset of the condition for many people.

There are many things you can do to look after your feet particularly if you have scleroderma or Raynaud's. Here are a few pointers:

Moisturise your feet as often as you can, ideally three or four times a day, being careful not to leave any cream between your toes. Something quite simple such as aqueous cream or E45® are popular choices (these may be bought at the chemist or may be available on prescription).

Inspect your feet daily – as you moisturise or put on your footwear, take a note of any changes in the skin. If you are concerned seek medical advice.
Choose footwear that doesn't rub and allows plenty of room for adequate socks or tights. A thick sole may help protect against the cold, and the use of a thermal insole is recommended if your footwear can accommodate one.

Whatever your concerns are about your foot health, it's worth asking to be referred to NHS podiatry services for a full podiatric assessment.

This month, we are speaking to various people within our community, like Soo Pickavance, who created a powerful image of what Raynaud's Awareness Month means to her.

Soo is an illustrator and artist from Liverpool who has Primary Raynaud's and was diagnosed in her early 20s. Despite the challenges Soo has experienced since finding out she has Raynaud's, she maintains a highly creative life and uses it to help her manage her condition. For Raynaud's Awareness Month, Soo illustrated an image that captures her experience with Raynaud and spoke to us about what inspired her to create the art piece.

"I have always drawn. I find that creating art is great form of relaxation for me but it also means my hands and fingers are moving which helps with my circulation. I was inspired to create the image for Raynaud's Awareness month a couple of years ago during a particularly bad series of Raynaud's 'attacks' and reactions to the cold. I realised that my fingers and hands tend to miss out on the typical initially turning white phase and instead turn purple straight away, so my picture reflects this.
Around the same time, I created a self-portrait that I entered into a competition (Portrait Artist of the Year) and although unsuccessful, I found that it was a way for me to express and share something about me that my younger self found embarrassing, especially as there was very little awareness about it then- I just used to hide my hands. I hope that sharing my work again can play a small part in the brilliant work that Raynaud's Awareness month is doing to promote the support and help that is available to anyone who thinks they may have the condition.''
