Wood energy allows us to be well rooted in the past, to stand tall in the present and have the vision and foresight to move ahead in the future.

Acupuncture can stimulate the liver and gallbladder organs and meridians, the energy associated with these meridians.

These meridians give us the energy to plan, have new ideas, move forward,
to change who we are, to be assertive
to make decisions and to have vision
with hope for our future.

When the Liver is out of balance might experience:

Tendon issues (contraction, weakness, rigidity and inflexibility)
Painful periods
Anger outbursts
Age spots or discolouration of the skin
Dark circles
Frustration
Vision problems

Spring & The Wood Element

Have you noticed feeling a little more irritable, tense, or restless lately?

When the Wood Element is balanced
Clear vision and purpose
• Emotional resilience
• Healthy digestion and detoxification
• Strong tendons and joints
Spring is known as “Small Yang” — Yang energy is rising and becoming more active, but it hasn’t yet reached its peak.

Signs the Wood Element may be out of balance
• Irritability or frustration
• Feeling stuck or unmotivated
• Neck, shoulder, or jaw tension
• Mood swings
• Difficulty waking in the morning
• Waking between 1–3am (Liver time in TCM)
• Feeling blocked creatively or emotionally

As Qi moves strongly in spring, imbalances may show up as tension, headaches, allergies, or emotional overwhelm.

Liver 3 (Taichong, or Supreme Rushing) is a major acupuncture point located on the top of the foot in the depression between the base of the first and second toes. It is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to spread Liver Qi, reduce stress, calm anger, alleviate headaches, and nourish liver blood.

Primary Functions:
* Moves Stagnant Qi: Used to treat irritability, mood swings, depression, and frequent sighing associated with Liver Qi stagnation.
*Calms the Mind & Body: Effective for treating stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
*Clears Heat: Used for headaches, dizziness, and red eyes.
Promotes Detoxification: Often used to support overall liver health.

🌱 Spring & The Wood Element
Have you noticed feeling a little more irritable, tense, or restless lately?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is connected to the Wood Element — the energy of growth, movement, and new beginnings.
Like a tree stretching toward the sky, Wood energy is upward, expansive, and full of life.

In the body, the Liver and Gallbladder govern the Wood Element. They help regulate the smooth flow of energy (Qi), support detoxification, and influence our ability to plan, make decisions, and move forward in life.

✨ When the Wood Element is balanced
• Clear vision and purpose
• Emotional resilience
• Healthy digestion and detoxification
• Strong tendons and joints
Spring is known as “Small Yang” — Yang energy is rising and becoming more active, but it hasn’t yet reached its peak.

⚖️ Signs the Wood Element may be out of balance
• Irritability or frustration
• Feeling stuck or unmotivated
• Neck, shoulder, or jaw tension
• Mood swings
• Difficulty waking in the morning
• Waking between 1–3am (Liver time in TCM)
• Feeling blocked creatively or emotionally
As Qi moves strongly in spring, imbalances may show up as tension, headaches, allergies, or emotional overwhelm.

🌿 Ways to support your Wood Element
• Eat fresh, green foods
• Move your body – walk, stretch, qigong or yoga
• Breathe deeply and release tension
• Express emotions and stay flexible
Supporting the Wood Element helps maintain the smooth flow of Qi, encouraging growth, clarity, and balance.

I have used this point a lot during the last weeks and not just for fertility patients!

The Kidney 1 (KI 1) point is the starting point of the Kidney meridian, which governs reproductive health, growth, and development. Warming this point—whether through moxa, a headlamp, massage, or warm socks—is a common fertility practice for the following reasons:

* Counteracts "Cold Womb": A "cold" uterus is believed to have poor blood flow, leading to constricted capillaries that cannot support life or embryo implantation.

* Boosts Kidney Yang: Warming the Kidney channel helps nourish "Kidney Yang," the warming energy that serves as a catalyst for critical reproductive processes like ovulation and implantation.

* Improves Circulation: Heat increases blood flow from the feet up the meridian to the pelvic area, sending fresh nutrients to the ovaries and uterus.

* Supports the Luteal Phase: It is particularly recommended during the second half of the menstrual cycle to support progesterone levels and maintain the internal body temperature required for pregnancy.

But I also use it a lot because Winter can be challenging for all of us and it can boost our energy and vitality. It can strengthen the Immune System (especially when used with St36) to strengthen your body’s defence against winter colds and flu.

1. Promotes Relaxation and Reduces Anxiety: Activating Kidney 1 has a calming effect on the body’s sympathetic nervous system. This can lead to reduced stress levels and anxiety, promoting a state of deep relaxation.

2. Improves Sleep Quality: Stimulation of this point can help alleviate insomnia and other sleep disorders. This benefit is particularly due to its ability to ground and settle the spirit, as per the principles of Chinese medicine.

3. Enhances Kidney Function: True to its name, KD1 is believed to be directly connected to kidney health. Stimulating this point is thought to invigorate the kidneys, enhancing their ability to purify blood and manage fluid balance in the body.

4. Relieves Headaches and Dizziness: By grounding the yang and drawing excess downwards, stimulating KD1 can help mitigate issues like headaches and dizziness, which are often symptoms of excessive yang in the upper body.

Other examples where KI 1 is used - A patient after severe emotional upset, suffering with repeated attacks of vomiting because of a contraflow of the liver qi which had also affected the stomach functional system. In the treatments the acupuncture points KID 1 "Gushing Spring" and LIV 3 "Great Rushing" were used in order to free up the liver functional system and to enrich the kidney functional system.

For another patient I used Ki 1 in combination with Du20 (a point on the top of the head) who suffered with brain fog, tinnitus and confusion as well as neuropathy.

In the treatment of nausea, particularly during pregnancy, Ki 1 can be used with the additional use of the further points fo”r example Golden Liquid" and "Jade Fluid" and/or Pc 6 and St 36.

Five Element Acupuncture

This powerful system of acupuncture is rooted in the belief that the body, mind and spirit are interconnected.

What to Expect During Treatment

In-Depth Consultation: Initial sessions are often longer (up to two hours) to gather a complete medical history and assess your emotional well-being.

Needling Technique: Very fine needles are inserted into specific points along energy pathways called meridians.

Moxibustion: A warming herb called moxa is frequently used to warm acupuncture points before or during needling to move energy (Qi).

Common Conditions Treated
Five Element Acupuncture is used for a wide range of issues.

Emotional issues: Stress, anxiety, depression, and grief.

Physical ailments: Chronic pain, migraines, digestive disorders, insomnia, hormone imbalance, fatigue, respiratory conditions, allergies and much more.

Preventative care: Maintaining balance and boosting the immune system before illness occurs.

This practice stimulates the body’s natural healing response, helping to calm the nervous system, regulate hormones, and release endorphins for pain relief, healing and relaxation.

Frequency: Treatments typically start weekly for about four weeks before moving to longer intervals for maintenance.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, that energy — known as qi — flows through pathways called meridians. Think of them as an intricate network of superhighways connecting your organs and systems, keeping everything communicating and functioning smoothly. When energy flows freely, the body feels balanced, energized, and well. When it becomes blocked or depleted, imbalance can begin to show up physically or emotionally.

Each meridian plays a unique role in maintaining overall harmony.

Each meridian belongs to one of five elements — Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal. These elements represent functional systems within the body and govern specific tissues, senses, and emotional qualities.

Wood
* Organs: Liver and Gallbladder
* Governs: Sinews (tendons and ligaments)
* Opens into: Eyes
* Associated quality: Smooth flow, flexibility, growth. Wood energy supports movement, planning, and the body’s ability to adapt and remain flexible — both physically and emotionally.

Fire
* Organs: Heart, Small Intestine, Pericardium, Triple Warmer (San Jiao)
* Governs: Blood vessels
* Opens into: Tongue
* Associated quality: Circulation, warmth, connection. Fire energy fuels circulation, vitality, joy, and communication throughout the body.

Earth
* Organs: Stomach and Spleen
* Governs: Muscles and flesh
* Opens into: Mouth
* Associated quality: Nourishment, stability, grounding. Earth energy is responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and building strength and stability.

Metal
* Organs: Lung and Large Intestine
* Governs: Skin and body hair
* Opens into: Nose
* Associated quality: Protection, clarity, boundaries. Metal energy regulates respiration, immunity, and the body’s ability to let go — physically and emotionally.

Water
* Organs: Kidney and Bladder
* Governs: Bones and marrow
* Opens into: Ears
* Associated quality: Vitality, willpower, restoration. Water energy stores our deepest reserves, supporting growth, reproduction, and long-term resilience.

Each meridian supports essential bodily functions:
* Lung (Metal) – Governs breathing and draws in vital energy.
* Large Intestine (Metal) – Eliminates waste and supports detoxification.
* Stomach (Earth) – Breaks down food and extracts nourishment.
* Spleen (Earth) – Distributes nutrients and supports muscle tone and healthy blood flow.
* Heart (Fire) – Circulates blood and houses emotional vitality.
* Small Intestine (Fire) – Separates and absorbs nutrients.
* Bladder (Water) – Removes liquid waste.
* Kidney (Water) – Stores essential energy and supports bones, marrow, and reproductive health.
* Pericardium (Fire) – Protects the heart and regulates emotional balance.
* Triple Warmer / San Jiao (Fire) – Coordinates metabolism, temperature, and fluid regulation.
* Gallbladder (Wood) – Stores and releases bile to aid digestion.
* Liver (Wood) – Ensures smooth energy flow and maintains tendon and ligament flexibility.

Restoring Balance
When one element becomes imbalanced, its related tissues and systems may show signs of stress. During an acupuncture treatment look at this interconnected network through a thorough health history and assessment of your lifestyle, habits, and symptoms.
Treatment may include acupuncture, massage, cupping or guasha and guidance by making small lifestyle changes or exercises — all designed to restore balance, support the free flow of qi, and help you feel strong, centered, and energised from the inside out.

Some patients I see have been struggling for a while with health problems that did not seem so bad at first but has slowly turned into something that keeps them doing what they love and their world get smaller each day. Chronic pain or illness stops them going to work, socialise, play a sport, go on a holiday or just take care of themselves and their family. Things we took for granted before now seem difficult to do each day.

Five Elements Acupuncture looks at the bigger picture and personalised treatment plans and techniques will be used to help you find the balance back. The goal of Eastern medicine treatments like acupuncture is to restore the smooth flow of qi across the body. In Western medicine speak, it's akin to homeostasis — aka the body's ability to retain optimal function despite changes in our environment.

A growing body of evidence suggests that acupuncture may benefit an array of conditions, including:
* Pain
* Diabetic neuropathy
* Fibromyalgia
* Tension headaches and migraines
* Addiction and withdrawals
* Anxiety and depression
* Insomnia
* IBS/GERD gastrointestinal problems
* Asthma
* Woman’s health
* Menopause
* Fertility acupuncture
