My mother did this in the 60-70s in winter. Hens stopped laying but she has always eggs for baking . I remember the big stone jar she stored them in . Mind you with only one fire to heat the whole house and snow blew under the front door ,icicles inside the windows I'm sure eggs would have been chilled anyway.
