LGBTQ+ History Month was established in the UK in 2005 by Schools OUT to highlight the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and raise awareness about the ongoing fight for equality and human rights
It takes place every February, marking the abolition of Section 28 in 2003, a law that previously banned the โpromotionโ of homosexuality in schools.
Facts About LGBTQ+ History Month:
๐ Origins: Founded by Schools OUT, an organisation that has been campaigning for LGBTQ+ inclusion in education since 1974.
๐
Why February? Chosen to coincide with the abolition of Section 28, ensuring LGBTQ+ history and issues can be openly discussed in schools.
๐ Annual Themes: Each year has a different theme, highlighting different aspects of LGBTQ+ history. Recent themes include โBehind the Lensโ (2023) and โPolitics in Artโ (2024).
๐ณ๏ธโ๐ A Global Movement: The UK celebrates in February, while other countries, including the US and Canada, mark it in October.
๐ฉโ๐ซ Education & Awareness: Schools, workplaces, and organisations use this time to celebrate LGBTQ+ achievements, educate people about the communityโs history, and promote inclusion.
From the trailblazers who fought for legal rights to the activists shaping the future, LGBTQ+ History Month is an opportunity to learn, celebrate, and continue the conversation about inclusion and diversity. This year, we encourage everyone to explore the stories, struggles, and triumphs of LGBTQ+ individuals. Whether through books, films, discussions, or local events, letโs honour those who have paved the way and commit to fostering a more inclusive society for all.
