Abbeyfield South Downs

Abbeyfield South Downs Safe, sociable retirement homes to rent across East Sussex and Kent. Enjoy an independent life. Today, there are hundreds of Abbeyfield properties nationwide.

The Abbeyfield Society was founded by Richard Carr-Gomm in 1956 to alleviate loneliness among older people who were living unsupported and with little contact with others. Some are managed centrally by the National Society, but most are managed by individual independent Abbeyfield member societies. Abbeyfield South Downs is one such society; a merger of former smaller member societies which have joined together to benefit from shared expertise and efficiencies.

Our Tunbridge Wells house, is pleased to welcome new resident Mr John
Portman.

John had a long-standing connection to
Abbeyfield.
He served for 10 years as a Regional
Secretary. In this role, John was responsible for supporting 34 independent living houses, regularly visiting them to provide guidance, share information, and ensure staff were up to date with policies, procedures, and fire safety standards.

Before joining Abbeyfield, John had a successful career in hospitality, working as a hotel manager in Birmingham.

One of the highlights of John’s time with Abbeyfield was his involvement with the
Bishop’s Castle Society, where he played a key role on the committee overseeing the
development of a new house from planning through to completion and operation.

John had the opportunity to meet the founder of Abbeyfield Mr Richard Carr-Gomm on three occasions, describing him as a “very charming and easy man with no side to him.”

John’s dedication and experience make him a wonderful addition to the Abbeyfield
community, and everyone is delighted to have him join our Tunbridge Wells house.

Sleep is essential for people of all ages, but it's especially important for older adults.
Since 1990 March has been dedicated to celebrating National Bed Month, which is an awareness initiative launched by the sleep charity, The Sleep council.

Getting a good night's sleep can help boost the immune system, improve memory, and reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and depression.

So, if you're an older adult, make sure you're getting enough quality sleep each night to reap the many benefits for your health and well-being.
Why not take a look back at one of our older blogs, "Sleeping well in older age," for some tips too?

March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, particularly as we get older. Being aware of the signs and speaking to your GP if you’re concerned can make a real difference.

Some symptoms to look out for include:
• needing to urinate more often, especially during the night
• needing to rush to the toilet
• difficulty starting to pass urine
• straining or taking a long time to urinate
• a weak urine flow
• feeling like your bladder has not fully emptied

If you notice any of these changes, it’s important to speak to your GP. They may carry out tests such as a urine test, a blood test (PSA test), or a physical examination to check your prostate and discuss whether further tests are needed.

This month we’re encouraging everyone in our community to look after their health, stay informed, and support one another. Awareness can help save lives.
