1. Stay Hydrated for Spinal Disc Health
💧Dehydration can reduce the fluid in your spinal discs, making them more prone to injury.
Tip: Keep a water bottle with you during outdoor activities or while traveling.

2. Posture Check During Travel
✈️ Long road trips or flights can lead to slouched sitting.
Tip: Use a small lumbar roll, the pillow you get on the plane or a rolled towel to support your lower back, and take standing or walking breaks every 1–2 hours.

3. Protect Your Back During Gardening or Yard Work
🌿 Bending and twisting can strain your lower back.
Tip: Use a kneeling pad, switch sides regularly, and engage your core when lifting.

4. Beach Chair Blues
🪑 Many beach chairs offer little back support.
Tip: Sit on a towel roll to support your lower back, or lie on your side instead of slumping back.

5. Don’t Ditch the Supportive Footwear
🩴 Flip-flops may feel comfy but offer no arch support.
Tip: Opt for sandals with arch support and cushioning—especially if walking long distances.

6. Be Smart With Summer Sports

🚫💥 Why “Cracking” Your Own Back Can Do More Harm Than Good 💥🚫
We get it—when your back feels tight, it’s tempting to twist or stretch until you hear that satisfying crack. Some people even ask a friend to “just crack it” for them. 😬

But here’s why that’s not a good idea:

👉 You’re not addressing the root cause. That pop might give temporary relief, but it doesn’t fix the underlying issue—and can actually make it worse over time.
👉 You could cause joint instability. Repeated self-cracking can lead to overstretched ligaments, which means your spine becomes less stable and more prone to injury.
👉 Untrained hands = high risk. When someone who isn’t a qualified chiropractor tries to adjust your spine, it can lead to nerve damage, muscle strain, or even more serious injuries. Chiropractors have spent a minimum of 3 years studying the spine and conditions related to the spine and know the warning signs to look out for when treatment might not be appropriate.

✔️ Chiropractic adjustments should always be performed by trained professionals who understand the anatomy of the spine and know how to target the correct joints safely and effectively.

A Personal Farewell ❤️

After an amazing chapter as Lead Assistant and Practice Manager here at Almondbury Spinal Health, it’s time for me to say farewell.

I’ve absolutely loved my time here — working with a truly fantastic team, getting to know our lovely patients, and being part of such a supportive community. I’ve learned a lot, laughed a lot, and made some lifelong friendships.

Sadly, my personal circumstances have pulled me back home to New Zealand. (Yes — New Zealand, not Australia. I know the accent confused many of you… but I promise, I’ve never once said “crikey.” 😉)

Thank you all for the kindness, chats, laughs, and memories - It’s been a pleasure.
