Wishing everyone a Happy New Year from us all. We remain open for appointments as physiotherapy is classified as a medical service.

Your health and safety is our priority, and we continue to follow the guidance provided by Public Health England. Check out our website for full details of what we are doing.

If you need to contact us, reschedule or book a new appointment, please call us on 01420 565644, send us an email, or visit our website.

We look forward to seeing you in clinic when you need us, and when it is safe to do so.

Acupuncture should be used to treat chronic pain according to new guidance for GPs and sufferers. The draft guidelines, released this month by NICE (National Institute of Health and Care Excellence), states that commonly used drug treatments for chronic pain have “little or no evidence that they work”. Instead, physical exercise, psychological therapy, antidepressants or acupuncture, should be offered to patients.

We use western acupuncture alongside osteopathy for our patients, and have seen improvements in pain levels with symptoms returning less often.

If you are suffering from chronic pain, give us a call or book online for a free initial consultation to see how we can help.

We have a new physiotherapist working for us from next week. Susan Cope has worked in the local area for many years, most recently from Mansfield Park Surgery before Coronavirus lockdown closed the practice. Prior to this she worked for Burchfield Physiotherapy, and has many years of experience working for the NHS at hospitals in Alton, Basingstoke and London. For more details about Sue's background and treatment approach, see our website.

Sue will be working on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Appointments can be booked on our website, or by calling our receptionists on 01420 613026.

We are receiving many more calls and emails now as lockdown restrictions are eased. We are doing our best to advise and direct you to the best possible service in the current climate.

We are continuing to follow the guidance issued by the physiotherapy governing body, providing video and telephone consultations where possible, and face to face clinic appointments only where remote appointments are not effective or appropriate.

At present the first appointment in a series of treatments will be remote, via video or telephone. Further appointments may be face to face or remote, depending on the nature of the problem being addressed. This will be discussed and agreed with the physiotherapist during the appointment.

In the meantime we have been updating our cleaning and hygiene procedures, and making changes to the clinic in line with public health guidance to ensure that appointments are as safe as possible when we fully return to normal. Further details are provided on our website.

If you would like to discuss how we can help you, do give us a call and we will be happy to help.

We have added a new page to our website with advice for home workers. There are examples of some common issues we see in clinic and their causes. We share some suggestions to minimise postural problems and manage them if they occur.

If you have a specific issue that you cannot manage yourself, please get in contact and we can discuss what options are available during lockdown.

With everyone confined to their homes, our gardens will no doubt get a lot of attention this spring. Bear in mind that your body may not be ready for the change in demands you place on it at this time of the year.

It may sound odd to do, but some simple stretching before you start will really help. And remember to bend your knees when lifting, and carry any weight directly in front of you - don't twist your spine while lifting if possible.

Check out our website for simple tips to keep you mobile and free from pain and stiffness.

Here's a few words from Alastair Jones, one of our physiotherapists.

I have been a qualified physiotherapist for over 5 years. I knew from the beginning of my student days that I wanted to specialize in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and I have gone on to work within this as a senior in the NHS in Guildford. I also work alongside GPs as a First Contact Practitioner to triage, treat, order investigations and refer musculoskeletal patients.

I aim to provide clarity on your condition, education and insight into your pain and how you can best manage it and treat using a mixture of exercise prescription, manual therapy and acupuncture.

Due to Coronavirus we are providing video and telephone appointments only at this time. These appointments can be booked on our website or by calling our landline. Below is feedback from a recent patient:

"I was due for my usual treatment and then had to self isolate. I booked a telephone appointment with Michael and spoke to him yesterday. He talked me through 5 exercises then emailed me the exercises to make sure I don’t forget them. I have booked another call with him to see how I am progressing. He was very understanding and referred to my notes that they make at the usual appointments. So glad I booked the telephone appointment." R, Hampshire
