As physios, we often talk about movement for strength, mobility and pain relief… But movement can support your mental wellbeing too 💚

This 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸, it’s a good reminder that exercise doesn’t always have to be intense or goal focused.

Sometimes movement is simply about helping you feel a little more like yourself again.

It can help with:
✨ reducing stress and tension
✨ clearing your head
✨ boosting confidence
✨ improving energy levels
✨ creating routine and connection
✨ giving yourself time to pause and breathe

Whether it’s a gentle walk, a Pilates class, stretching at home, or getting outside for some fresh air, small movements can make a big difference.

At Altrincham Physiotherapy, we’re passionate about helping you move in a way that feels safe, supportive and realistic for you, whatever stage you’re at.

Be kind to your body and your mind this week 💚

Thinking about getting back into hill walking?

One thing we often see is people heading straight out onto the hills without much preparation, then wondering why their hips or knees start to complain a few miles in.

Before you even get there, the groundwork matters.

Mat work exercises are a simple way to build strength around your hips and core, which play a big role in keeping your pelvis stable and your knees moving well when you’re walking.

If those areas aren’t doing their job properly, other parts of the body tend to take the strain, which is often when discomfort starts.

The good news is it doesn’t need to be complicated.

A few simple exercises, done regularly, can help you feel more supported, more stable, and more confident before you even step onto uneven ground.

If you’re starting to plan some walks over the coming months, this is a great place to begin.

Menopause doesn’t just affect hormones, it can affect how your whole body feels and moves.

You might notice more joint stiffness, aches that weren’t there before, reduced strength, or even changes in balance.

For some, old injuries can start to flare up again, or recovery from exercise feels slower than it used to.

This is often linked to changes in oestrogen levels, which play a role in keeping muscles, joints and connective tissues healthy.

The good news is, there’s a lot you can do to support your body through it.

Physiotherapy can help you.

It’s not about pushing through discomfort, it’s about understanding what your body needs at this stage and working with it.

Your body is changing, but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with pain or stop doing the things you enjoy.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s worth getting it checked.
Early support can make a real difference.

Your health is our priority, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

What a weekend at the Manchester Marathon 👏

Huge congratulations to everyone involved, runners, volunteers, stewards and supporters.
It takes a whole community to make something like this happen.

And Altrincham really brought the energy… we’ve heard so many runners say it was one of the best parts of the route 🙌

If you’re feeling it today, remember recovery matters just as much as training.

We’re here if you need a helping hand 💪

Is stretching a waste of time?

Not at all… but it’s often misunderstood.

Flexibility isn’t about touching your toes.
It’s about keeping your joints moving well so everyday things like bending, reaching or getting up from a chair feel easy.

As we get older, or if we do a lot of running, cycling or strengthening, muscles can become tight from working in shorter positions.

Stretching helps restore that balance and keep your body moving freely.

But it’s not just about stretching.
Being strong through a full range of movement is what really helps protect your body.

In simple terms, strength and flexibility together keep you moving well.

Even a few minutes regularly can make a difference.
If you’re not sure what’s right for you, we’re here to help.

Good luck to everyone taking part in the Manchester Marathon this Sunday.

All the training, early mornings and miles logged are about to pay off.

Whether this is your first marathon or one of many, your body has been through a lot to get you to the start line. Looking after it afterwards is just as important as the training itself.

From managing tight muscles and soreness to addressing any niggles that have built up along the way, recovery is key to helping you get back to doing what you love.

If something doesn’t feel quite right after race day, don’t ignore it. A small issue can quickly become something more if left too long.

We’re here to support you through both training and recovery, so you can keep moving with confidence.

Book an appointment if you need us, and enjoy every moment of the day.

This article explains why exercise is increasingly recognised as an important part of supporting people during and after cancer treatment.

Research shows that regular physical activity can help improve immune function, reduce inflammation and support overall wellbeing during recovery. It can also help manage fatigue, maintain muscle strength and improve quality of life.

Recent research has even suggested that short periods of intense activity, sometimes as little as ten minutes, may trigger beneficial biological responses in the body.

Functional exercises such as squats can be particularly helpful because they strengthen the hips, knees and ankles while supporting everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs and getting up from a chair.

At Altrincham Physiotherapy we can provide personalised guidance so exercise is safe, appropriate and adapted to each individual’s needs and stage of recovery.

As many of us embark on an exercise or gym routine for the new year, research reveals that just 10 minutes of intense exercise could help fight cancer.

We're celebrating 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 today,
because movement is a key part of long term health

Good health is not just about avoiding illness. It is about being able to move well, stay strong and remain independent as we get older.

One of the biggest changes that occurs with ageing is sarcopenia, the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength.

Without regular strength and resistance exercise, this can affect balance, mobility and overall physical function.

The good news is that it is never too late to start building strength.
Research shows that resistance exercise can significantly improve muscle strength and support joint health at any age.

Physiotherapy can help you introduce safe and effective exercises that protect joints while improving strength and confidence in movement.

Staying strong helps you continue doing the things you enjoy for longer.

Don't forget to check out our online Pilates classes which can aid in strength and resistance as we age.

Bouncing into Easter and back onto the tennis court
With Easter weekend arriving and the lighter evenings returning, many people are bouncing back onto the tennis court after the winter break.

This is the time of year when we start to see common injuries such as tennis elbow, calf strains and shoulder pain. Often it happens when enthusiasm is high and the body has not quite caught up yet.

It can be tempting to sign up to every match going, but easing into the season and allowing time for recovery between games can make a big difference in preventing injury.

Physiotherapy can help improve strength, mobility and movement control so joints and muscles cope better with the demands of the game and you can stay on court throughout the season.

If something is starting to feel uncomfortable when you play, it is worth getting advice early.

Check out what we can treat here: https://altrinchamphysio.co.uk/what-we-treat/

Small aches and niggles are often your body’s early warning signs.

It is very common for people to ignore small aches and pains and hope they will simply go away. A tight shoulder, a niggling knee or an uncomfortable back can seem manageable at first, but these issues often develop gradually over time.

Physiotherapy is not just about treating serious injuries. It is about identifying what is causing the problem early and addressing it before it becomes something that limits your activity.

During an appointment we assess movement, strength and joint function to understand what is driving the pain.
Often a few targeted exercises and simple adjustments can make a big difference.

If something has been bothering you for a while, it is worth getting it checked before it becomes a bigger issue.

Sometimes happiness is simply moving without pain.

World Happiness Day is often about positivity and big smiles.

But for many people, happiness is much simpler than that.

It is walking the dog without discomfort.
Sleeping through the night.
Getting back to exercise with confidence.
Playing with your children without worrying about your back.

When pain limits your movement, it can quietly affect your mood, energy and motivation.

Physiotherapy focuses on restoring strength, improving movement and helping you feel comfortable in your body again.

We are passionate about helping you live a pain free and active life.
