The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
Hearing loss is a non-visible disability. Non-visible disabilities can defy stereotypes of what people might think disabled people look like, so it can be difficult for them to access what they need. The impact of living with a non-visible disability can be slight, or can have a huge effect on someone’s life.
Communication is the heart of the problem, so on todays International Day of People with Disabilities we ask you to think about how you can communicate and connect with people with hearing loss.
