MENINGITIS OUTBREAK IN KENT
Currently the Meningitis B vaccination is offered to children under the age of 2 years as part of the primary immunisation programme.
There are currently no changes to the national programme.
The Meningitis ACWY vaccination is given to children in school year 9, and if missed, can be given at the surgery up to the age of 24 years.
The surgery will update accordingly if there are any changes.

There is currently an ongoing outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease - a form of meningitis - in Kent. Meningitis is a serious condition where the protective layers (meninges) around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed.

It has many causes, such as different germs, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In the UK, most cases are due to bacteria or viruses. Some of the bacteria that cause meningitis can also lead to septicaemia (blood poisoning), and both conditions can result in sepsis, which is life-threatening.

Although anyone can get meningitis, it’s most common in babies, young children, teenagers, and young adults. It needs to be treated quickly so it is important to know the signs and symptoms which can happen in any order and may not all be present.

🎗️ Ovarian Cancer Awareness🎗️
Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries, which are 2 small organs either side of the womb that store eggs and produce female hormones.
It mostly affects women over the age of 50, but it can affect anyone who has ovaries.
Sometimes ovarian cancer can run in families and the symptoms are not always obvious.
Common symptoms can include:
• Persistent bloating
• Feeling full quickly or loss of appetite
• Pain or discomfort in the tummy or pelvis
• Needing to p*e more often
Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed later than other cancers, but early diagnosis can make it more treatable.
Even if you have had your ovaries removed, cancer can still develop in the Fallopian tubes or the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum).
⚠️ Important:
❗️If you notice symptoms that are new, persistent or unusual for you, please contact your GP practice❗️
Getting symptoms checked early can make a difference.
