We planted these seeds a long time ago. For a while we thought they wouldn’t germinate at all and then they struggled through the soil. Sometimes we cared for them carefully and gently, sometimes we neglected them a bit. They continued their slow growth upwards. For a while they stalled completely and we gave up on them. But they struggled on and battled through the winds, rain and September storm to bloom into brightness on this cold, dark day.

There is always hope. We can always improve. There is always a way to grow and flourish - inch by inch.

Acceptance, such a quiet, but weighty, word. Often, acceptance is the key to a deeper, more meaningful life. And acceptance isn’t passive. It’s a leaning in, a looking things in the face and taking them for what they are - so you can then choose how to act.

Taking time for a moment of gratitude for this beautiful day.

Research shows that finding time for gratitude can be a powerful way of boosting your mental health. When can you find the time to fit a gratitude reflection into your daily life? It doesn’t have to be big - a moment’s pause to savour that hot cup of tea in your hand and be thankful for it is enough - but, over time, it will make a big difference to the way you feel about and approach life.

This is how I start my days. It grounds me and helps me remember what really matters in my life. December’s focus is ‘meditations on mortality’. Death anxiety is actually really common but it’s only by looking mortality straight in the eye that we can come to accept it and that our own mortality is what gives our life meaning and depth. How can you start your days in a meaningful way?

I'm Liz Keenaghan-Clark, the owner and founder of Two Roads Therapy. I chose that name, inspired by the Robert Frost poem, because I think we all have the potential to make choices about our mental health. We might not be able to change what happens to us, but we can change how we respond to it.

And I can help with that. I'm a BACP registered Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. In a nutshell that means that I've been trained in lots of different approaches, so that we can pick the best tools to help you with whatever your issue is in that moment. If that sounds appealing, check out my website or drop me an email.
