📰 You may have seen in the news recently…

Reports of meningitis cases — including local outbreaks — are a timely reminder that this serious illness doesn’t only affect babies and young people.
Older adults are also at risk — and the risk is rising.

A study by Meningitis Now found that:
🔹 96% of people aged 65+ don’t believe they are at risk
🔹 75% are not confident recognising the symptoms
As we age, our immune system naturally weakens, making infections like meningitis more dangerous — and often harder to spot.

💡 Symptoms in older adults can be different
It doesn’t always present with the classic signs. Instead, you might notice:
▪️ Sudden confusion or disorientation
▪️ Fatigue or extreme drowsiness
▪️ A decline in general wellbeing
▪️ Unsteadiness or difficulty walking
▪️ Changes in speech or concentration
▪️ Sensitivity to light
▪️ Fever, headache, nausea or vomiting
▪️ Cold hands and feet, limb pain, or pale/mottled skin
▪️ In more severe cases, seizures or loss of consciousness

⚠️ Meningitis is a medical emergency
If something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait — seek urgent medical advice.
The NHS recommends the pneumococcal vaccine for everyone aged 65 and over. It’s one of the most effective ways to protect against certain types of meningitis — so it’s worth checking if you or your loved one is up to date.

💙 At Ashridge, we understand how important it is to notice even the smallest changes. Our carers are trained to spot early signs and act quickly, helping to keep our clients safe and supported at home.

💬 Meet Humera – supporting new carers every step of their journey, and if you’ve recently joined us, there’s a good chance she has already guided you through the compliance process from interview to training. 😊

Humera joined our recruitment team in December, and although she admits she felt nervous at first, it didn’t take long for her to feel at home.
“Everyone was so warm and welcoming… I feel like I’ve been here for years.”

That same warmth is what she brings to every new starter. Humera is there to make sure carers feel supported, listened to, and never alone during the process.

“One of the most important things is making sure people feel comfortable to ask questions and know we’re here to help.”

What does she enjoy most about working at Ashridge?
“My team! They’re so supportive, friendly and always there for you — it really shows how much Ashridge cares about its people.”

When asked to describe the culture at Ashridge, Humera chose three words:
Supportive. Compassionate. Friendly. 💙

Humera’s top tip for anyone thinking about a career in care:
✔️ “Choose a place where you feel comfortable from the very beginning — with the right training, ongoing support, and guidance to help you feel confident in your role.”

As we get older, something as simple as eating and drinking well can become more challenging — yet it becomes more important than ever.
In fact, over 1 million older people in the UK are malnourished or at risk. Often, it’s not intentional — appetite changes, routines shift, and preparing meals can feel overwhelming.

This is where one-to-one live-in care can make a real difference.
Having a dedicated carer means:
✔️ Meals are prepared with the right balance of nutrients
✔️ Hydration is gently encouraged throughout the day
✔️ Food becomes enjoyable again — not a chore
✔️ Routines are maintained, supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing

Evidence from the Live-in Care Hub highlights the real impact of personalised care, showing that 81% of people receiving live-in care get the food and drink they want, when they want it — compared with 66% in residential care and just 52% in nursing homes.

It’s often the simple things that matter most — a warm, home-cooked meal, a cup of tea shared together, or the reassurance that someone is there to support you.
Beyond nutrition, these daily moments help maintain independence, dignity, and overall happiness.💙

If you’d like to understand how live-in care can help prevent malnutrition, explore our practical tips and insights here.👇

Happy Mother’s Day! 🌷

Today we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures whose love, patience and quiet strength shape our lives in ways we never forget.

In care, we are reminded every day how powerful those bonds are. Many of the wonderful people we support spent their lives caring for others — raising families, guiding children, and building homes full of love and memories.

It’s a privilege for Ashridge to support so many incredible mothers in our community — helping to ensure that each day still holds moments of connection, reassurance and joy. Sometimes it’s a conversation over a cup of tea, a walk in the garden, or reminiscing about treasured memories. Often it’s the small, simple moments that matter most.

Today we’re thinking of all the mums who continue to inspire us — and all those whose love still lives on in the stories we share.💙🙏

If you’re spending time with your mum or remembering her today, we’d love to hear your favourite memory. 😇
