My dear friend, 51 yr old, mother of two, Ali Young is race ready. We start at 10pm Pacific time monday. (6am Tuesday UK time)

The Badwater 135 is an ultra-endurance footrace spanning 135 miles from Death Valley’s Badwater Basin (282 feet below sea level) to Whitney Portal (8,360 feet).

Traversing through California’s Mojave Desert in July, runners face extreme heat reaching up to 130Β°F (54Β°C). The course climbs a total of 14,600 feet and descends 6,100 feet, passing through Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells, Panamint Springs, and Lone Pine. Known as the β€œworld’s toughest foot race,” it challenges athletes with brutal temperatures, relentless climbs, and long stretches of exposed desert highway. The final ascent to Whitney Portal marks the grueling race’s dramatic conclusion with 12.5 miles climbing 5000ft.

There will be a live feed at the start here.

I'll update in the comments here whenever I get reception which may only be 5 times during the race.

Forecast is 48⁰C with a steady breeze. It feels like a hairdryer on hot, constantly..... pointed right at you. πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Sophie getting a 1min PB of 3hrs 26min despite the heat.

And of course Ali managing to break the Guinness World Record for fastest bird 🐧🐧🐧πŸ’ͺ

Thank you Annelize for all the help and the photos and the Penguin paraphernalia. 🐧🐧😎

A little extract from my chat with Matt Roberts at Evolution Clubs who runs the most incredible bone health centre with REMS scanning, Powerplate, Biodensity and the Physio-led Liftmor protocol. All aimed at reducing fracture risk naturally.

The full podcast is here:

Balance, strength, and good bone density all play crucial roles in reducing the risk of fractures during a fall:

1. Balance: Good balance helps prevent falls in the first place. It allows you to control your body's position and recover from trips or stumbles before hitting the ground. Better balance reduces the likelihood of falling awkwardly, which is a major factor in fracture risk.

2. Strength: Strong muscles, especially in the legs and core, provide stability and help you react quickly to prevent or control a fall. If a fall does happen, stronger muscles can absorb some of the impact, reducing the force transferred to the bones.

3. Bone Density: Higher bone density makes bones more resistant to fractures. When bones are dense and strong, they are less likely to break under the impact of a fall. Conversely, low bone density (as seen in osteoporosis) makes bones more fragile and prone to breaking even from minor falls.

By improving balance, strength, and bone density through exercise, proper nutrition, and lifestyle choices, individuals can significantly lower their risk of fractures in the event of a fall.

Undeterred by train cancellations, storm warnings and a splash of rain, Ella (my grandaughter) and I made it in to London for our annual trip to see the Christmas Lights and bag a few presents.

Dior and Ferrari got Ella's nod of approval (for lights..... not presents 😳)

This is a really good in-depth article published in The Telegraph that explains how Sarah improved her bone density in the last 4 yrs or so.

9% improvement in her spine and 4.5% in her hip....... but most importantly she was able to run 20+ miles in training and race without causing a stress fracture. London Marathon completed πŸ’ͺ🦴

We've had some lovely messages from people over the last couple of weeks saying how inspired they feel reading this success story. Having a fracture or being diagnosed with osteoporosis can be very scary. There is hope!!

Checking your bone health status is so important. The Echolight REMS system offers an accurate, non-invasive and radiation free way of screening your bones and monitoring your gains.

Prevention is better than cure. Building strong and healthy bones sooner rather than later is paramount in avoiding osteoporosis and increased fracture risk.

REMS bone scans help identify the need for bone strengthening activities and offer accurate monitoring to show improvements.

Knowing your bone health is essential for preventing fractures, osteoporosis, and maintaining overall mobility as you age.

Strong bones support daily activities, protect organs, and reduce injury risks. Early awareness helps in taking preventive actions through diet, exercise, and lifestyle, ensuring a healthier, more active future.

The natural rate of bone loss doubles during menopause but this can be offset with lifestyle, exercise and nutritional interventions. Knowing your bone health helps inform your decisions

Go to www.profortis.co.uk for more details and to book a bone screening appointment.

Following a bone health screening with the Echolight REMS bone scanner we offer a consultation covering lifestyle, nutrition and exercise interventions that can improve the strength and quality of your bones to reduce fracture risk.

Nutrition supports bone health by providing essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and boron. Calcium strengthens bones, vitamin D aids calcium absorption, magnesium supports bone density, and boron enhances bone mineralization and metabolism. A balanced diet ensures these nutrients, promoting strong, resilient bones and reducing fracture risk. It's also possible to use supplements which are evidence based.

One of the supplements we recommend is the Algae sourced calcium from nutri advanced which is very similar to the Algae-cal supplement which showed an average improvement in bone density of 1% per year.

Anyway, nutri advanced are offering a discount for September. So stock up while you can. Make sure you get the K2 and D3 supplement as well.
