Did you know a simple activity such as walking could ease joint pain?

“Several studies have found that walking reduces arthritis-related pain, and that walking five to six miles a week can even prevent arthritis from forming in the first place. Walking protects the joints especially the knees and hips, which are most susceptible to osteoarthritis, by lubricating them and strengthening the muscles that support them.”

As a medical establishment we are, on a day to day basis, acutely aware of the safety and health of our staff and patients. APC is following Public Health England's guidelines for health professionals which you can read here ➡️ http://bit.ly/39T5G7M.

The clinic is is kept very clean and we request that all patients use the provided hand sanitiser when they arrive and leave the practice. If any patients have a new and persistent cough or a fever please contact the clinic as soon as possible to reschedule your appointment for at least 2 weeks (after a period of self-quarantine) from the onset of your symptoms and are feeling better.

Pilates classes ARE continuing for the time being but instructors suggest clients bring their own mats and a small towel to cover head cushions should they wish to.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING - Be Back Safe!

Don't let Christmas be a pain in the back. Last year we gave our Top Ten Christmas Tips (always worth reviewing; here is the link http://bit.ly/Christmas18APC) to avoid any musculoskeletal injury. This year we are all about spines!

Most injuries needing medical attention over the festive period are spine related.

• Christmas light hanging is the greatest culprit! Use a ladder and a helper. Always…
• Putting up the tree: no twisting or reaching!
• Decorations going up: again, use a ladder or a stable platform.
• Avoid bending and lifting incorrectly or awkwardly – turkeys can be heavy!
• Take regular breaks and pace the preparation and festivities.
• Regular walks will ease any spine stiffness and avoid sitting for too long.
• Party Pain: the dance floor is always tempting as are Christmas cocktails but go easy if out of practise (on both counts!). Your spine will thank you for it.

The end of Wimbledon brings with it a flurry of tennis enthusiasm for young and old and beginner and seasoned players. Find some top tips from Nicci Caswell our owner and proprietor to keep you doing the sport you love and not be deterred by ni**les or injuries. 🎾🕶

Tendon related issues are the most common source of pain for many players, especially around the elbow and shoulder joints. The shoulder is a complex joint as it tries to be a flexible but needs to remain stable throughout any movement – there may be structures around the shoulder that can be irritated, especially the rotator cuff. The reason for the injury prone nature of the rotator cuff is up for debate. These tendons are slow to adapt to change and can be highly irritable when introduced to new activities – this is especially so in tennis where both highly demanding overhead movements and repetitive actions are required.

Tennis needs:
• Flexibility
• Full range of shoulder elevation, thoracic spine rotation and extension and shoulder blade mobility
• Co-ordination (power and length of muscles around the shoulder girdle are important)
• Strength from legs and trunk to help generate power in serve/smash etc
• Muscle balance around the shoulder especially muscles controlling the shoulder blade, back and bottom muscles.
We spending the winter slouched in front of a computer, suddenly summer arrives, Wimbledon fever takes over and we expect our shoulders to be able to cope with the demands required to play tennis, without any preparation at all?
Overuse injuries quickly develop; these are preventable and easily managed with simple advice.

Here are a few to prevent injury and your tennis:
• Pre-season - start exercising with specific overhead movements with global strength and flexibility
• Start playing at a low intensity early in the season
• Do have rest days between training sessions and games with gradual increase
• Warm up is so important to increase your heart rate. Use a dynamic warm up and include a flexibility programme for shoulders, arms and legs
• Cool down post exercise must not be forgotten and must include stretches
If you are struggling with a ni**le or an injury, come to Amesbury Physiotherapy for some treatment and advice to get you back on, or keep you on the court!

MEET THE TEAM - Rose Fenton Reflexologist

Concluding our team introductions - Rose Fenton is an experienced reflexologist and a Member of The Association of Reflexologists. She is also a skilled yoga teacher and practitioner. Read on to learn more about what reflexology is and to learn more about Rose. https://bit.ly/2UIPyho

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves a pressure technique using the thumbs and fingers on the reflex areas found in the feet and hands. Reflexology is extremely effective and is based on the principle that reflexes in the feet and hands correspond to each organ and structure in the body, and are linked to those organs by energy channels, zones or meridians. When illness occurs in the body, the corresponding energy channels become blocked, and Reflexology is applied to destroy these blockages, allowing the energy to flow freely again, so restoring the body's natural balance and therefore good health.
