April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Wales, with more than 2,200 people diagnosed each year.

Recognising the symptoms of bowel cancer early can help save your life.

It’s important you contact your GP if you notice:
🔹Bleeding from your bottom
🔹Blood in your poo
🔹A change in how often you poo, or regularly having diarrhoea or constipation
🔹Unexplained weight loss
🔹Feeling very tired all the time
🔹A pain or lump in your tummy

These symptoms don’t always mean you have bowel cancer, but it’s important not to ignore them. Speaking to your GP as soon as you notice changes can help ensure you get the right support.

Research shows that 9 in 10 people survive bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage

Visiting an open farm this weekend? 🐑

As cute as they may be, avoid cuddling or holding lambs, as this hugely increases the risk of germs spreading 🦠

If you’re touching or feeding animals, make sure you wash your hands with warm water and soap afterwards 🧼

Germs like Cryptosporidium are common around farms and can spread illness quickly, but good handwashing will help protect you and your little ones.

Parents and carers, please take a moment today to check your child’s vaccination record.

With recent meningitis cases reported in the UK and the large outbreak in Kent, it’s more important than ever to make sure children and teenagers are fully protected.

✔️ Contact your GP or our Vaccination Team on 0300 303 8322 (option 1) emailing ask.hdd@wales.nhs.uk or by completing this form https://forms.office.com/e/wWLTziGQNk

✔️ Make sure babies have received their MenB doses

✔️ Ensure teenagers are up to date with their MenACWY and 3 in 1 boosters

Vaccination is one of the best ways to keep your family safe and healthy.

Let’s protect our children and our communities.

Healthier Eyes Closer to Your Home 👁

“Vision loss isn’t just functional - it’s emotional too. We’re here to listen and support.” – Alan Evans, Optometrist, Maggs Optics, Haverfordwest

Low vision doesn’t just affect what you can see – it can affect your confidence, independence and emotional wellbeing too.

Alan emphasises that opticians can support you emotionally as well as practically.

Your optician can help you:
✅ Talking openly about how vision loss feels
✅ Reassuring that support, devices and training can improve independence.
✅ Offering referral to counselling and support groups
✅ Encouraging to maximise the remaining vision by optimising lighting, increasing contrast, using larger and bolder texts
✅ Advising on simplifying and organising daily routines
✅ Demonstrating, supplying and monitoring the use of assistive aids and advising of technologies like smart phone voice assistants.

Alan mentions that after receiving low vision support, many patients have felt more confident managing everyday life, reporting:

🔹 Less anxiety about their sight
🔹Improved ability to read and carry out daily tasks
🔹Reduced reliance on others and a stronger sense of control and independence

If you or someone you know is struggling with low vision, your local optician can help you feel understood, reassured and better equipped to adapt to changes in your sight.
