Find a way to help others
email from Liz Taylor

I’m a parent of a dyslexic 4th grader. Our son was diagnosed in 1st grade and he is now in a wonderful and supportive school that allows his Barton tutoring during the school day. He has made remarkable progress in the past 2 years. It hasn’t been easy but he is doing the hard work and moving forward through your program.

I am an illustrator and I wanted to find a way to use my abilities to share his story and the story of so many courageous dyslexic kids in a visual way. So, I created the illustration that I have attached to this email. It was a wonderfully fulfilling project and my heart is to share it as much as possible if it can be a help to parents, students and their teachers.

This by no means captures everything that it means to be a dyslexic student in school, but my hope is that there is enough here to help parents and students to facilitate productive dialog with the professionals working with their children.

I saw you speak once in the early and blurry days of his initial diagnosis and I remember you saying that once you are through the fire, find a way to help others. This is my hope with this illustration. I hope you enjoy it as the labor of love that it is and I would be overjoyed if you shared it with parents who might find it useful.

Thank you for your life’s work. It is important and good.

Best,
Liz Taylor

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling. It's a specific learning difficulty, which means it causes problems with certain abilities used for learning, such as reading and writing. Unlike a learning disability, intelligence isn't affected.

Personal Information:

I am a qualified OCR 5 Dyslexia Tutor with previous experience working in a large special needs school teaching children with specific learning difficulties: Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD and Autistic spectrum disorders. I also tutor privately on a 1:1 basis and work for the Dyslexia Association of Windsor, Maidenhead, Bracknell and Slough. I am a Member of BDA, PATOSS and am DBS certified. References and testimonials can be provided on request. I am holistic in my approach, teaching in a fun and informal way. I use a highly rated structured spelling programme (Alpha to Omega) and multisensory teaching techniques. The programme teaches spelling rules explicitly and constantly builds on previously gained knowledge. I use the results from the assessments including the dyslexia screening test to develop teaching strategies which use the strengths of the student to help remediate the weaknesses.

I promote a "can do" attitude towards learning and teach positive thinking skills and encourage positive self-talk. This develops and improves self-esteem and builds resilience. In my spare time, I enjoy walking my dog, visiting beaches and the surrounding countryside, reading and cooking. I consider myself to be kind, warm, easy going and good humoured and believe learning should be a fun experience Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further information or queries you may have.

Thank you for reading this and I look forward to hearing from you.
