How does pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PGP) affect mental health?

Managing persistant pain and keeping up with the demands of every day life can be really challenging for your mental health. Getting treatment for PGP can reduce pain and increase mobility, making a huge difference to your mental health. Ask your healthcare provider for a referral for treatment, or see if you can self refer for physiotherapy. If you are in a position to pay for treatment, we have a list of recommended practitioners on our website.

Visit our website or useful pages via our Linktree for advice on living with PGP, getting support for your mental health, or about treatment

Our coordinator discusses how her physiotherapist Teja assesses women with PGP:
šŸ”¶Discusses a full history including any risk factors
šŸ”¶Carries out a full physical assessment including function of the pelvis
šŸ”¶Uses a validated test to determine how well the pelvis can transfer load as a guide for subsequent treatment

Are you experiencing symptoms of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PGP)? PGP can be safely and effectively treated. Make sure you get a hands-on assessment and a treatment plan as soon as you can.

A mummy MOT is for anyone who’s had a baby, even if your babies are all grown up! We know that statistically more than 1 in 3 women are symptomatic and many suffer in silence. Symptoms can present in different ways; urinary leakage, bowel leakage, constipation, vaginal prolapse or pain in the v***a and/or with in*******se. Although having a baby puts women at greater risk, you don’t have to have had a pregnancy or birth to experience any of the above symptoms. The pelvic floor is complex and it’s not all about Kegel’s! So if you are symptomatic or just want to know how your pelvic floor is performing book a Mummy MOT or Pelvic Health appointment.

Just before the Olympics these incredible Team GB mums are talking about the taboos in pelvic health and the importance of physiotherapy 🄰. The pelvic floor like all other muscles in the body need rehab when they have endured injury. Leaking is never normal but it is common. Don’t live with symptoms when you don’t have to. šŸ‘‡šŸ½

Following on with this for World Continence Week. 10% of adults have experienced this at some point, yet it’s often not talked about. Women who have experienced a third degree tear are at greater risk. If you have suffered with this, help is available. Pelvic Health physiotherapists are very experienced in managing this, and will create a safe and comfortable space to talk about it openly.

Overactive bladder syndrome is not a disease itself but is the name for a group of different urinary symptoms.

If you're noticing that it's harder to control your bladder after giving birth, you are having leaks or rushing to use the loo all the time, you're not alone. It is common postnatally for women to experience changes in their bladder function, with pregnancy and childbirth increasing your risk of both incontinence and developing an overactive bladder.

The most commonly experienced is an ā€˜urgency’ where there is a sudden urge or need to have a wee. This can happen at any time during the day or night, often without warning and can lead to a loss of bladder control and accidental leaks. Another common symptom is increased ā€˜frequency’, where you are needing to wee many times during the day or night.
