Why You Might Experience Negative Thoughts During a Reiki Session, And Why That’s Okay.
Reiki is a deeply relaxing and nurturing healing modality, yet some clients find themselves surprised when they experience negative thoughts or emotions during a session. If this has happened to you, know that you’re not alone, and that it’s actually part of the healing process.
Let’s explore why this happens and how it can actually be a sign of deep transformation.

Healing Isn’t Always Just Peaceful, Sometimes It’s Honest
When you receive Reiki, your energy begins to shift. Blockages may start to dissolve, and stuck emotions that you’ve held onto (sometimes for years) can begin to surface. These may come through as negative thoughts, uncomfortable memories, or emotions like sadness, anger, or fear.
This doesn’t mean the Reiki isn’t working, it means your body and mind are releasing what no longer serves you.

The Mind May Resist Stillness
In our fast-paced world, many of us aren’t used to stillness. When you finally slow down in a session, your mind might initially push back. It may replay old thoughts, limiting beliefs, or even doubts about your healing journey. This resistance is normal, and it’s part of the process of returning to balance.

You’re in a Safe Space to Feel
Reiki creates a safe and grounded space, and your body knows this. In that safety, things you’ve held back may rise to the surface. It's not unusual to feel emotional, reflective, or even overwhelmed during or after a session. These feelings are part of an emotional detox, and they usually pass as the energy continues to settle.

Trust What Arises
The most important thing to remember is this: whatever arises during a Reiki session is welcome. Your body and energy know what needs attention. Whether you feel calm, tearful, restless, or filled with thoughts, it’s all okay. Healing is rarely linear. It often asks us to feel what we’ve ignored or suppressed so that we can truly move forward.

Gentle Guidance After a Session:
Drink water to help support your energy flow.
Rest or reflect, especially if strong emotions have surfaced.
Journal any thoughts or feelings that came up, they may hold important insights.
Reach out to your Reiki practitioner if you need support or reassurance.

You are not broken. You are healing, layer by layer.
And that includes learning how to hold space for all parts of yourself, even the ones that feel uncomfortable.
With calm and care,
