It's this week. Here are just 7 of the many ways blind and partially sighted people use braille in everyday life:
1. Reading π
Braille gives blind and partially sighted people equal access to the written word through books and magazines. Many people prefer to actively read braille over listening to Talking Books.
2. Labelling items π₯«
From everyday items like tinned food to the packaging of medicines, braille can be used to label objects so blind and partially sighted people can easily identify them.
3. Having fun π΅
From card games and board games to sheet music and bingo, braille opens up a world of entertainment.
4.Accessing important information βοΈ
Bank statements, letters and bills can be provided in braille. Everyone has the right to access information in an accessible format.
5. Education and employment βοΈ
From making notes, reviewing long documents or giving a presentation, reading braille is a useful skill in school and in the workplace. As well as books and learning resources, we also produce braille exam papers.
6. Enhancing assistive technology π»
Electronic braille displays enable blind people to access information on a computer screen. This equipment works well in conjunction with screen readers and magnification software.
7.Independence π
Braille signage in public spaces and braille menus in restaurants provide many blind and partially sighted people with freedom at our fingertips.
RNIB is the largest publisher of braille in Europe. We produce magazines, books, music, exam papers and bank statements.
