Watching someone you love battle with dementia can be heartbraking 💔

There are a few things you can do help make their every day a little easier:

✅ Place clear labels on doors and cupboards, and if possible keep items in the same place. Dementia affects short term memory - if your person has lived in the same house for many years and had specific places for things, now is not the time to move them. While their short term memory is affected, they might still remember that plates are kept in this cupboard and it will be very confusing if they are moved. If they live in a new house, make sure that cupboards are clearly labeled, to avoid the frustration of them looking through every cupboard just to find a plate or a bowl.

✅ Good lighting in all rooms - dementia can also affect a person's eyesight. Making sure there is good lighting in the home will help reduce frustration and the risk of falls

✅ Removing trip hazards like loose rugs - in addition to affecting memory, dementia can also affect limbs. A person can feel like their feet are swollen or like they are walking on spikes. As a result many people will shuffle their feet when walking. Removing trip hazards helps keep them safe from falls.
