⭐️Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder⭐️

ADHD is a common condition that affects people's behaviour, which becomes challenging and frustrating for them. Understanding the symptoms displayed in ADHD is important for professionals and parents who support and care for individuals.

As speech and language therapists, we can help by supporting social communication, social understanding and attention and listening difficulties.

There is a lot of information and help available for individuals with ADHD which is provided by organisations such as ADHD Aware

Please visit their website to find out more: https://adhdaware.org.uk/

We are helping to raise awareness for the non-speaking / non-verbal community today.

As speech and language therapists, we support non-verbal individuals and aim to improve their communication in the best way possible. In raising awareness, we believe that giving individuals the opportunity to interact and be included in conversations with others, is vital for their development and mental well-being.

Please remember to be kind because

A huge congratulations to Carys who has achieved a merit in her MSc Speech and Language Therapy Course!

It has been an intense couple of years with highs and lows and quite rightly feels proud of her achievement.

Please take a look through the graphics for an insight into some of the course challenges, and successes.

It was an emotional day yesterday as we said farewell to Jane (our Speech and Language Therapy Assistant of 10 years) as she headed into retirement.

Her patience, knowledge and humour has always been paramount and has been an integral part of our team. She will be missed by us all and we wish her the very best in this next chapter.

Yesterday we ran a Makaton Level 3 Course for a lovely group of people who were wanting to expand their existing Makaton skills and knowledge.

Take a peek at our short video and if you fancy learning some Makaton from scratch, or want to progress to another level, then visit our forthcoming courses page:

Our Speech and Language Therapist Katy, spotted these wonderful communication supports whilst out and about with her family recently.

It's great to see British Sign Language being supported at Paignton Zoo as well as at the Almond Valley Heritage Centre with their lovely Learn, Sign and Play board.

Those with sensory differences are also being considered and included at the National Trust's Greenway House through the provision of a sensory station.

Well done to all of these places 👏 Additions like these can make a big difference to the overall experience of individuals with communication and sensory needs.

There are currently around 1 million people in the UK living with dementia with it mainly affecting people over the age of 65 (source: alzheimers.org.uk).

The word 'dementia' describes a set of symptoms that over time can affect memory, problem-solving, language and behaviour. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia.

As Speech and Language Therapists, we work with a wide range of individuals, including those with dementia and those caring for them. We strive to provide valuable communication support to help improve their quality of life.

What a superstar! What an opportunity!

The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) based in the USA, recently held its 31st New York City Buddy Walk®. This campaign includes over 150 events in the U.S. and several international events that raise funds globally. These directly benefit local Down Syndrome communities, help increase social opportunities, drive policy change, and build relationships.

The event included an hour-long Times Square video presentation that featured images of more than 500 individuals with Down Syndrome from across the world. One of these individuals was Arabella, who we have had the pleasure of supporting for almost two years.

She is super proud of herself and has lots of smiles when anyone talks about the experience.

This is a great, inclusive idea for those with speech, language or communication difficulties. A card contained inside the seatbelt cover allows the user to add information about how they like to be communicated with. The cover is wrapped around an adult seatbelt using Velcro, and is easily detachable for when the vehicle is not in use.

Inclusive thinking like this can make all the difference to those with neurodevelopmental conditions and it would be great to see more areas offering them.

We're offering drivers and passengers with speech, language or communication needs free seatbelt covers to help make things easier after incidents on the road.

The covers contain a card inside which allows the user to add their name, age, address, medical conditions or other information about how they like to be communicated with.

➡️ Anyone who feels they may benefit from one can collect a cover from their nearest Police Enquiry Office (PEO).

Check where your nearest PEO is: https://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/contact/find-a-police-station/

At the beginning of the Summer holiday, our client (a young adult) was not using her eye gaze consistently, and was not moving her eyes around the screen.

In five intense sessions over the Summer with our SLT Rosie, she has been able to learn cause and effect on the eye gaze, learning that when she looks at items on the screen, something happens. In the video, our client uses her eyes to break the bottles on the screen and in doing so, becomes familiar with moving her eyes around the screen.

This is the foundation work that will hopefully lead our client to achieving the ultimate goal of using the eye gaze to communicate her wants, needs and choices using symbols.

What great progress!
