Today is - a day where British Sign Language is celebrated each year.

The British Sign Language (BSL) Act was passed on 28th April 2022 following years of hard work and campaigning. The British Deaf Association has therefore chosen this date to celebrate BSL finally being recognised as an indigenous language of Great Britain.

BSL plays a vital role in speech and language therapy by providing an essential means of communication for individuals who are deaf, or who have speech and language difficulties, supporting their social, emotional, and educational development.

We've recently come across these two straw bottles by Sistema Plastics and Skip Hop which we really like!

Whilst we sell other straw drinking bottles as part of our product offering, we would also recommend these as additional options. Either would be great for anyone transitioning their little one from bottle to straw drinking, and also for anyone trying to teach lip rounding and tongue positioning.

Both bottles are available to purchase online.

The human voice is a critical aspect of effective and healthy communication, and it is important to look after it.

Hoarseness, vocal fatigue, or voice strain can occur when the voice is used a lot - especially if you work in a profession where you use your voice a lot. If you experience any of these voice difficulties, then take a look through the graphics for some helpful information about SOVT exercises.

is approaching and so we thought we'd share some voice information over the next few days starting with some facts (featured in the graphics).

It's really important to look after your voice especially if you use it professionally for example, as a teacher, lawyer, public speaker or singer.

There are a number of indicators to be mindful of if you begin to have problems with your voice. Some of these include:

- your voice becoming hoarse or raspy
- difficulty reaching high notes when singing
- your voice sounding deeper than usual
- your throat often feeling raw or painful
- finding it an effort to talk
- needing to keep clearing your throat

If you think you may be experiencing voice problems, then visit your GP who will refer you to a specialist if needed.

We set our own active challenge in January and have collectively been clocking up the equivalent kilometres from Appleby Magna UK, to Appleby in Texas. This has so far been via a combination of walking, running, swimming, rollerskating, cycling and dancing!

Hopefully will be the month that we complete our goal - it’s certainly been encouraging us to be more active!

April is .

A diagnosis of autism is an important turning point in the journey for families to further understand their child’s needs. As Speech and Language Therapists, we believe early intervention can improve a person’s speech, learning, communication and social skills.

There are many organisations that offer support to families whose children have received a diagnosis of autism. Some of these include the National Autistic Society, Autism Speaks and Ambitious about Autism.

Together, we can support individuals with autism, to communicate in the best way possible and celebrate their achievements.

Easter provides lots of opportunity for exploring some fun language activities. Words and sounds can be repeated on their own, or put into short, Easter themed sentences.

Consider playing games that incorporate prepositions (in, on, under...), scavenger word hunts, or get creative with making/baking activities to help with instruction following, listening and attention.

There's so much you can do to encourage speech and language - but most importantly - have fun!
