'NHS Tayside has scrapped new referrals for childrenโ€™s autism and ADHD assessments amid a years-long backlog.

The health board will no longer accept neurodevelopmental referrals to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for those without a co-existing mental health problem.

This includes assessment for conditions such as ADHD and autism.'

๐Ÿฅบ

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) assesses and treats children and young people with 'significant and impairing' mental health concerns.

Repost

Teaching people about how their brains and nervous system work together can be such an amazing shame-breaker for distressing experiences like anxiety, PTSD, overwhelm, and all the physical manifestations of these.

It's not easy to find an image of the brain that is appropriate for young people. Something that captures the complexity beyond downstairs/upstairs metaphors but doesn't look like it was taken from a medical book aimed at grad students. Even more difficult to find an image that includes not just 'brain stem' but also how this connects to our nervous system and senses.

๐Ÿ˜ข 4 years must feel like a lifetime ๐Ÿ˜ข

Did you know that CAMHS actively recommend the use of Drawing and Talking therapy
as an intervention, whilst waiting between referrals and child engagement.

Drawing and Talking is clinically recognised as tier 1/2 intervention.

Results differ for each person based on
emotional development through the
process, but here's how Drawing and Talking Therapy may help support you during that waiting list void....

โ€ข It allows us to build emotional resilience
and an understanding of human
connection.
โ€ข Greater self-esteem
โ€ข Ability to make important and safe human
connections
โ€ข Happier
โ€ข Reduction in anxieties
โ€ข Resolution of internal turmoil

North East MSP Tess White fears lengthy waits in the "under siege" system could mean young people's education is impacted.

'Part of being human is our fundamental need to feel accepted, connected and loved. The importance of relationships, connections and feeling understood play a key role in the success of our survival and leading a fulfilled life.

Many children and young people do not feel safely connected to others. This can have a significant impact on their choices and lives going forward. This is particularly true of children and young people who are diagnosed, or self-identify, as having Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDAers). Schools can be a particularly challenging environment for PDAers.'

You can read more here ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ about how Drawing and Talking can support you or someone you know with PDA.

FEELS play a vital role in our life, influencing our behaviours and overall well-being. However, many of us may struggle to accurately identify and name the FEEL, leading to emotional confusion and difficulties in effectively managing emotions.

Learning to recognise the FEELS and naming the FEEL is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships, managing stress, overcoming challenges, and promoting mental health.

Disregarding and ignoring our FEELS is bad for our mental health, often creating an internal pressure cooker. We may begin to rely on screen time, alcohol, drug use, excessive exercise, over-eating etc to avoid acknowledging our feelings.

Current neuroscience suggests that the more emotions and conflicts a person experiences, the more anxiety they feel.

Drawing and Talking and Sandplay Therapy are very effective therapeutic interventions that can really help develop the important skill of identifying our FEELS and understanding why we might be feeling them which in turn can help us to make peace with them or at least begin to acknowledge the FEEL we once ignored.
