Big news for families with 3 or more children

The rules for universal credit changed on 6 April 2026 so that it is possible to include all (eligible) children in your household in your award (previously there was a two child limit).

If you have three or more children, you may become entitled to the benefit for the first time, or if you are on universal credit already you may be due an increase (although this may not apply if you are subject to the benefit cap or have transitional protection in your award).

Not sure if this applies to you? Get in touch for further advice!

New payment for care leavers from 1 April 2026

Care Leaver Payment is a new one-off payment of £2,000 for young people leaving care in Scotland.

It aims to help with the costs of living independently and paid by the local council.

Care Leaver Payment can be paid to a young person who was in care on or after their 16th birthday, and left care on or after 1 April 2026, and is not getting continuing care.

It can also be paid to a young person who was getting continuing care but stopped getting it on after 1 April 2026.

A care leaver does not have to apply for the payment. It will be paid automatically by the local council that last looked after them when they leave care and start to live independently.

The payment won’t affect their benefits or other income.

If you would like advice on the payment, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
