The Dalitso Project

The Dalitso Project Working hand in hand to beat poverty through orphan care, education, food programs, vocational training, health care and house building in Malawi.

The Dalitso Project is a registered Scottish charity SC046514 The Dalitso Project is a Christian based charity working in partnership with Aquaid Lifeline to provide orphan care, education, vocational training, food programs and house building for the poorest of the poor in Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. Dalitso means ‘blessing’ in Chichewa, the language of Malawi. As a charity we aim to bless the people of Malawi but have found that they bless us in return. The groups involvement in Malawi began in 2007 when a group of 7 young people visited Namisu orphan school and village in the south of Malawi and got to see the tough conditions children were living in. With this they decided to fund the building and running of 2 daycare centres and 2 residences for the most at risk young people. These are based in the Thyolo and Kambilonjo regions. Each of these centres are up and running and care for 300 plus children, providing nursery care, additional education (primary schools are only open in the mornings), food and training/further education for the older young people. Since then 2 further trips of 15 have visited the projects, 2 gap students and now a yearly trip ensures that developments of these projects continue. In Kambilonjo which is a very hard to reach, mountainous region of Malawi on the Mozambique border, a health clinic has been built in partnership with the local government. This will mean that the children in our centres and the local community have access to medical care on their doorstep instead of having to take the 1 hour journey on the back of a truck down a very bumpy and often dangerous road like before. To raise money to fund these main projects we run regular fundraisers and a Sponsor Child program. More information of upcoming events and how to get involved in the Sponsor program is available regularly on the main page.

The team has arrived safely, and all 21 bags made it too!
They were welcomed with much excitement and a whole lot of noise as you’ll see from the video.
Tonight will be a chance to unpack and get some rest after the long journey.
Tomorrow the focus is to begin the interview process with the children.

Each night in Malawi we eat, sing and play games together — and this year, the resident children will have a wee sweet treat to enjoy too 🍬

The bags were personalised by Candy Dreams, ready to hand out during our evening gatherings. A lovely touch that’s sure to make the nights even more special 🇲🇼 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

📸 Welcome Rehearsals Underway

The children are already rehearsing to welcome the team.
Since 2007, they’ve greeted us with music, dance, drama, and even some impressive acrobatics—a tradition that has continued year after year.

We look forward to sharing some of their performances with you once we’re back from this trip. 🖤❤💚

Here is Beattie busy doing the reports at Kambilonjo.
She’s our Child Welfare Officer and has been working for the centre for a good few years.
She regularly visits the children's homes and knows each child, family and their homes like the back of her hand!
She is currently doing her rounds and completing the reports needed before the team arrive next month.
She is checking living conditions and basic items that the family may need over the next wee while.
Beattie is a great asset to The Dalitso Project. Keep up the excellent work Beattie! 🖤❤💚

🧱 Progress update from Kambilonjo

The digging has begun for the foundations of the new maternity unit.
Bricks are all lined up ready for the next step to this amazing unit.

This project has been made possible through the generous legacy gift we received, and it’s encouraging to see the work moving from plans into reality. We’ll continue sharing updates as the building takes shape in the weeks ahead.

📚Yesterday marked the 1st day of school!
The girls photographed attend school at Zomba and will board there for the academic year.

All our local schools and other boarding schools have started back too and the children are very excited to begin learning. As you may know the schooling system is very different in Malawi than the UK. Without a uniform, jotters and stationery children are not allowed to attend.
Our £15 month sponsorship programme ensures all our children have what they need to go to school.

We hope all the children have a very successful academic year. 🖤❤💚
